Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I find it kind of funny that this showed up while I've been watching Oliver Stone's The Untold History of the United States.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.I'm bothered by the fact that these targets were mostly or entirely citizens of the States.
"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."Occupy Wallstreet happened in America. Who else were they going to target, Australians?
As for teaming up with bankers; considering the protest was centered largely on banks it makes sense because it was those guys that would have been in danger if things had actually turned to large scale violence. That's like being surprised that a police detail talks with the doctor in charge at an abortion clinic when there's a large, potentially violent mob outside the clinic.
In any case, the surveillance is something of the type I'm already pretty sure they were doing, so any alarm you think you should feel over this is something you should have been feeling for a long while now.
Seriously, fuck them. They are cracking down on peaceful protests that are just suggesting that the rich shouldn't run everything.
Yes but why attack them? It says in the article that they acknowledged they were peaceful yet they still decided to crack down on them. I could understand keeping tabs on the movement and monitoring their actions but they don't seem to have done anything to warrant the crackdown. It comes off as the FBI protecting the bankers from imagined threats which is worrying since it means they put their safety above that of the citizens.
We do have an old OWS thread that this conversation should take in. And as for why; government tends to be paranoid about safety. And that the banks wield more power than they should is also an unsurprising fact we've been over. In any case, the FBI hasn't actually done anything, it was mostly the police getting either stupid on their own or getting bad orders from higher ups. Again, something that we went over in the OWS thread exhaustively. Anything more about this particular article and subject should go there.
But people in this thread have a remarkable resistance to going to the actual appropriate threads when they get linked.
Dude, Tomu, I said that from experience. Some pages back people insisted on talking about presidents no matter how many times I linked to the actual president's thread. No one was polite enough to go there. They just kept talking about past presidents.

That said, there are two OWS relevant threads that aren't locked.

Hillary Clinton returns to hospital after blood clot discovered.
No word on the severity of it. Hopefully it's somewhere relatively easy to treat.
Let Hillary retire, she's done enough.
Also the comments really piss me off. Apparently she's faking this to avoid having to testify. I really wish this Benghazi thing would go away. Bush had 43 deaths of this nature under his administration yet I never heard about calls to impeach him.
edit: I'd rather Julian Castro be the next president. Elizabeth Warren would be nice too though.

Current mayor of San Antonio and the keynote speaker at the last Democratic Convention.
He seems like a decent guy and is a Harvard graduate. Also I want him to win just to see how the GOP would react if we go from a Hussein to a Castro. Granted he's still unproven for the most part but I have a feeling he'd be someone to look out for.
edit: Unfortunately he's not interested in the presidency right now but that could change.

@Joesolo: Yes, I know that we've had plans to invade Canada as long as there's been a Canada. And plans for alien invasions, etc. Making plans to do things that they probably never need to do is a thing that the FBI does. Is there any evidence that the FBI acted on any of these plans, or were going to act on them before OWS fizzled?
I guess what I mean is that there are contingency plans and then there are plan plans. A lot of what the US has done is horrible but if we looked at all of the things that never got off the ground as a crime as well, everyone's in very, very deep doodoo.

I'm more bothered by them teaming up with the bankers.
