Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

why is it a wild claim.
Republicans and democrats agree on invading countries without war declarations, tortuting prisoners, executing people with drones out of mere suspission, wiretapping foreigners and nationals, even in a domestic context, without warrants (so long 4th ammendment), tax cuts for the rich, cuts on social security.
You know who masterminded things such as "obamacare" and "carbon taxes"? The Heritage Fundation...
Sure democrats are in favour of a few issues that dont really bother corporations, such as abortion and gay marriage, but they will vote to give AT&T all the leaway to steal your information, or to give virizon the capacity to violate net neutrality....

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.@Baff
That is a heavily baseless claim.
9/11 is probably the only example of such an incident. People were red with rage and couldn't think clearly after that incident. It's similar with the Newtown shooting. Once there are cold-blooded casualties people want to act.
Also that "Obamacare" and "Carbon Taxes" you just said, stop there. That's heavily bordering people who claim 9/11 was an inside job logic.
Also dude that thing with giving companies such as AT&T information it's a sort of type of logic. If it'll help prevent such major incidents it has my support. Also it's not like it will wreck the fun you have with your friends on the phone. If it's a misunderstanding you have to understand the level of sensitivity people are to such terrible incidents occurring again.
"I don't give a rat's ass about going to hell. I guess it's because I feel like I'm already there." -Mugen@Baff: I don't think the Democrats CAN give in even if they wanted to. They offered the Republicans a horrible, Social Security-cutting, rich-protecting compromise, and the Republicans rejected it. Boehner came up with an even more awful Plan B, and his own caucus rejected it.
What can the Democrats offer? The repeal of the Voting Rights Act? The abolition of Social Security altogether? Anything insane enough to appease the Tea Party caucus won't pass the Senate, even if Harry Reid and Obama wanted it to, because any Dem senator willing to vote for it would be committing political suicide, as would many of the more moderate Republican senators. Democrats "folding" to the Republican House requires that the Republican House actually be capable of doing anything. It's not.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.![]()
You mean the status quo? That would require repealing the entire sequester, something that Congress would have to vote on. And remember how we got here in the first place: a last ditch deal to raise the debt ceiling. The next vote on that is fast approaching, and the consequences of screwing that up are orders of magnitude worse than the "fiscal cliff".

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining. Can we talk about funding education? And the rich/poor divide? Because this scares the shit out of me.
Cost of living and education is just getting too high. People literally cant afford it, while the rich keep getting richer. prices go up but income doesnt. think of how familys used to easily live off of just the dad working. now in most familys both parents have to work and they still struggle.

I know. You know when these things started stagnating? The eighties. Someone remind me who was president at that time.
Honestly the minimum wage either needs to be raised or tied into the salary of the highest paid employee and college tuition needs to be reined in. 40K maximum for one year sounds about right. Anything else is simply too expensive and even that is hard for most families.
My family is going to have trouble sending me to college and we're not exactly living outside our means. We rarely eat out, there are only three of us (plus two cats), and we have never been on a vacation that's more than five hours away from our home (so we don't fly on planes). We probably spend more on food than we need to but we're not exactly living the high life compared to most of my friends yet we're still struggling to pay for things. It's ridiculous.
I can relate. we've gone on exactly 2 vacations in my life farther than the state next to us. we do have some luxuries(we have a 21ft boat) but it's not excessive.* My dad gets payed pretty well but my mom can't get a job since she hadn't had a job in a few years, so no one wants to hire her.

At least the Dems aren't out of their mind with massive troll logic.

Not only that but more lies have been spewed by Repubs than Dems ever have.
Romney is a testament to your usual pinhead Republican.
