Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Murdoch wants to buy
the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.
He already owns the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and Fox News.

Old news, but very up-to-date of what a scumbag Murdoch truly is...

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacio- lifts a can of Coke in Norman's honor*
Anyway, I think that if the moderate Republicans could defect or otherwise coalition with the Democrats to get anything done, they would have done so already. Again, if Lisa Murkowski won't break ranks, nobody will.
No, our politics have hit complete gridlock; it's probably only a matter of time before the government shuts down. Only I doubt it'll go quite the way it did in 95-96, because Obama doesn't have Clinton's balls and because the Tea Party is far more insane than Gingrich...yes, I said that. I honestly have no idea how it'll resolve; my tendency to take everything to its logical conclusion suggests that the government will be unable to vote on funding the military, at which point Obama will be forced to assume dictatorial powers, but that couldn't happen in America...right?
The Senate unanimously voted for a bill
that allows Netflix users to share videos, without privacy for your emails.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.I swear there needs to be some kind of law against owning too many news outlets. I know people fear the big bad government dictating what is and isn't news but shouldn't they be more worried about private citizens, who have no need to fight for the common good of Americans, altering political discourse?
To be fair, Netflix wanted its users to share movies with one another via social media. It had no plans regarding the emails in social media, like Facebook.
The Democrats wanted an amendment to the Netflix bill that fixed the part of a law that allows for the government to arrest you without a warrant if they felt that your emails, which they tracked, indicated that you were a terrorist. House Republicans blocked that bill, even though it wasn't even something Netflix told them to do.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Serrocco, that article doesn't say Obama's helping him. Hell, Murdock probably views him as an enemy, given Obama's savvy use of new media. And the obvious fact that they're in diametricly opposed parties right now. It's the FCC that makes those decisions to make or scrap the rules, and the article says so. You seem to have deliberately interpreted that as Obama helping him out.
This is as stupid as blaming the whole "ketchup is a vegetable" debacle on Reagan when it was the Health Department that was in direct control of that classification and Reagan wouldn't have directly influenced that decision.
Not really understanding what any of that means, I'm just glad I don't have Netflix right now.

Newsparers are dying, so it doesn't really matter much.
Dying, but far from dead, and they still have power. Plus, there's the fact that the big media companies have their hands heavily into print news's replacements as well.
Besides, giant monopolies are seldom a good thing regardless of the market.
What's precedent ever done for us?Ronald Reagan ignored Queen Elizabeth's Windsor Castle invitation for 2 whole months.
And That's Terrible (apparently).

They haven't caved yet..
And unless the Republicans are willing to bring back the Clinton Tax Rate,I don't think they'll cave now.
