Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There isn't really one "deadline", I don't think. The various provisions that make up the cliff will take place one after, starting with the expiration of the Bush Tax Cuts on January 1, 2013.

I've heard Michèle Flournoy
is an alternative to Hagel.
Ashton Carter
has also been named as a potential candidate but that's less likely.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016The Republicans want Flournoy as Secretary of Defense, but then again, they also wanted Chuck Hagel before they were against him.
Flournoy worked on policies regarding defense and security, while Carter basically carried out said policies, though before Flournoy came into the Pentagon.
I think Obama will pick Flournoy, but since she donated to Hillary's campaign, the Republicans will probably use that as fuel to lash out against Flournoy.

I get the feeling that a deal will not be reached until the very last second.
Harry Reid concedes that a deal might not occur.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Senator Mc Connell: Dems Slow to Act to Avoid Cliff
Repubs need to be made to take the proper blame and responsibility for their actions. Going over the cliff is the only way at present that this can happen. As much as I would like people not to suffer over it, that appears to be unavoidable at this point.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Right now it sounds like the plan for republicans is to let us go over the cliff, then vote yes on an emergency measure to stop the tax raises.
That way, come 2014, they can't be killed by the tea party primary for "raising taxes"
Republicans aren't running against democrats, they're running against their own party.
@ Serocco: Obama could pick Sarah Palin as secretary at this point and the Tea Party wing would find a reason to oppose him.
@ Thorn: Running against or running from?

12 midnight on New Years Day simply because all of those tax cuts and other things expire on that day.
