The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Kostya

Taking care of the raising of taxes once hitting the fiscal cliff seems really lackadaisical. Not to mention doubtful the jerks from the GOP will get behind it once reached either.

It's really in the GOP's court here. They control the House but if they can't even get their own caucus to support a bill put forth by their Speaker, much less put forth a proposal that has a chance of passing in the Senate, nothing will happen.

At this point, the best hope we have of getting anything done is for more moderate Republicans in both houses of Congress to defect.

I really wonder how the alt. history crowd among the Tea Partiers will spin such a defection. I can imagine a dramatic name; something like "The Great Betrayal" perhaps?

I'm pretty sure that they're trying to push us over so that they can blame the inevitable bad consequences on Obama. Although I saw a poll once that said that many Americans believed that they were doing exactly that, so maybe the public is getting savvy enough to realize dirty boxing when they see it.

Overall, Congress has a dismal approval rating, but many Americans do approve of their own representatives. It's the mentality of "all politicians are corrupt or incompetent except the ones I voted for".

The poll I saw said that if we go over the cliff 51% will blame Republican obstructionists, 27% will blame Obama (and presumably the Democrats), and the rest blame both.

@couch: well. the problem is even Go P backed plans are failing for even daring to compromise even a tiny bit.

In short, no deal is possible because the only form of deal the Tea party recognizes as valid anymore is handing the government over to them and shooting yourself in the head if you arent one of them, because they are the only remaining bastion of "real america"

the Piers Morgan petition. Proof a certain subset of americans cant grasp how hilarious it is to be so pro-2nd amendment and pro-constitution that they demand the destruction of the Firsyt Amendment.

@Kostya

11% of the blame should only be given to Obama and more like 72% should belong to the Republican party. Obama should have mended the bill more last week before giving up just like that. The Republicans however hold more of the blame for being such curmudgeon fucks.

especially since even when Obama gave republicans almost everything they wanted, they still voted it down for even daring to not be 100% in line with far right dogma.

Which is why even republican strategists seem to mostly be posting that they give up. because it seems it is literally impossible to get the Tea party aligned segments of the party to compromise even a single iota with anyone.

Indeed. I said it before but if I was Obama I'd intentionally drive us off the cliff just to prove a point. Obviously I wouldn't say that out loud but I'd probably think it.

edit: Seriously they need to get beaten down now before they become too entrenched in our nation's political system.

he doesnt even really need to anymore given even the republican "Plan B" that supposedly better fit what republicans wanted couldnt survive the republican house to even get to a floor vote.

When even a plan suggested by your own party that is basically "everything we want. and a token almost useless tax raise on the super-rich" is too liberal a plan for the Tea party, your party is in trouble.

Yeah, the plan B thing is really telling. Boehner's own party is screwing him over at this point.

edit: Wait, it was everything else? I thought it did a few other things like removing cuts for certain programs. Wow. Anybody who still thinks they're the rational side needs to be shown that.

edit 2: Of course I'm one to talk since I think they should just bow to all the Democrats demands and shut up about it.

Dick Armey, chairman of the Tea Party FreedomWorks group, walked into the group's Capitol Hill offices with his wife and an aide holstering a handgun at his waist.

The gun-wielding assistant escorted FreedomWorks' top two employees off the premises, while Armey suspended several others who broke down in sobs at the news.

In other surreal news, Harry Reid is accusing Boehner of running the house like a "dictatorship". If Boehner is a dictator, he's a pretty lousy one.
