Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

NRA calls for armed school guards
@ UY: They had a valid concern about Hagel's ability to defend LGBTQ servicepeople in the U.S. Armed Forces. In response to his apology, the major LGBTQ activist groups accepted it with grace and withdrew their complaints. Sure some people didn't, but you can't please everyone.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. The NRA has no interest in preventing gun violence; they find it quite sufficient to stop it once it has started.

...So they're suggesting that we put policemen in schools?
I... I actually wouldn't have a problem with that. I mean, it's the job of the policemen to protect the innocents. That certainly includes people in schools. It's definitely a much better use of policemen than, say, arresting people for smoking pot. :/
...I can't believe that I'm actually agreeing with the NRA.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Is that the non-internet version of Internet Backdraft?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI like the Policeman idea too. They are actually trained to use it guns properly, and are evaluated more than often enough to not worry about stress and so on.
Teachers definitely are not. So arming them would not solve anything.(and there's many other reasons, already stated before)
The only people I want to see with guns should be Hunters, in a specific area designated for it, and Authority, that is, Policemen, Military, etc. Teachers? Definitely not. Their job can be extremely stressful, and giving them a weapon designed to kill things is not the best idea ever.
The NRA has got the right idea this time.
Quest 64 threadThe NRA still has some allies though:
Rush Limbaugh praises 'classy' NRA
The idea is sound, don't get me wrong, but how the fuck do we pay for this? Police department and education funding are already getting gutted left and right. I also can't see tax increases to pay for this being very popular. Obviously it's going to come out of the education funding and will crush our schools even worse.
@Sledge: ...No. Policemen have guns whether or not they're in the school. My solution to gun violence is for the police to do their damn job, and defend the innocent.
@Kostaya: Both of those are problems in of themselves. We need to fix those too.
@Thorn: I actually did not know that. However, that does not mean that cops can't help in situations like that. :/ Sure, they failed then, but they won't fail every time. Especially since they're trained for dealing with situations where innocents are in danger.

I didn't see you speaking out against Todd Akin or Richard Mourdock for their incendiary comments against women
