The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm sorry, but using the word "token" is not inherently racist.

Really? With all the shit that's been thrown at Obama he's saying the Times is racist for pointing out how it's bizarre that black people are in the Republican party? Has he looked at his own party lately?

edit:

Liberal hatred against minorities are part of history. They made a civil war to keep slavery, made Jim Craw Laws, the KKK in 1862 (Tax and Spend Racist Liberal Senator from West Virginia) LBJ deported millions of legal Latin-Americans, without due process of law, voted against Civil Rights in 55 and used the N WORD after signing the Civil Rights Act forced by Republican heroes like Dr. King and the Senators who destroyed the filibuster made by Democrats. 96 Democrats voted against Civil Rights and the same racist Democrats controlled many southern legislatures Until the last 3 elections destroying the mith of the so called "Southern Strategy". Liberals made concentration camps for Japanese-Americans and German-Americans, dropped the atomic bomb on half a million civilians, bombed little children, women and old people in Europe with incendiary bombs, started all the horrors in Vietnam, bombed civilians in the former Yugoslavia like Djokovic neighborhood in Servia and now bomb little children with drones having absolute knowledge about it and only for their stupid sadism!

Very good, you paid attention in history class. However it seems you missed the part where the Dixiecrats were in favor of a lot of those things. You know, those dudes that got kicked out and joined the GOP. Also I have never seen a Republican politician that was opposed to those atrocities yet I've seen plenty of Democrats.

edit: That is not to say the Democrats are blameless but to deny that the GOP are the ones doing their best to keep us at war in the Middle East makes you a very ignorant individual.

Yes, clearly an opinion piece proves that the newspaper it appeared in is racist.

Edit: And the opposition to Hagel is ridiculous and stupid. Do these people even know what the Secretary of Defense does? Guess what, it doesn't matter what he thinks about gay ambassadors. Idiot activists. You are why Democrats are barely less partisan than Republicans.

[up]Well I would question a newspaper that published an article that was blatant hate speech, editorial or not. This isn't hate speech or racist though so his rage is ridiculous.

At least it's not Romney or that other guy we were worried about. What was his name again?

edit: Good for him in any case.

Sure, whatever. I think they should've doubled down with Susan Rice, but I suppose it isn't that important. Kerry will be fine.

Is Secretary of State just going to become "The failed presidential candidate" post now?

[up]Maybe. We'll see if the pattern holds after the next election.

The SOPA guy?

Also I would have loved to see the media's reaction to Romney being made Secretary of State.

Is Secretary of State just going to become "The failed presidential candidate" post now?

Hasn't it been that since John C. Calhoun?

I would too. I wonder who would be more interesting, Fox or MSNBC.

We now have video of Obama nominating Kerry

Kerry seems pleased as punch.

Ted Kennedy Jr is seriously considering running for senate if John Kerry vacates the seat to become the next secretary of state.

Yeah, I mean, I was like "Oh no, who are they gonna find to keep that self-proclaimed centrist that's really just another Republican shill out of the senate?" And then BOOM! A Kennedy shows up.

"Oh okay, that works."

Leading gay philanthropist James Hormel: I question the sincerity of Chuck Hagel’s ‘so-called apology’

The Kennedys are assured victory in Massachusetts. There Americas most famous Political Dynasty (as opposed to the Bushes, who are America's most infamous Political Dynasty).

It's a little late for Hormel to be offended, don't you think? 1998 was a while ago.

And again, this is what's wrong with gay activists. Hagel's private views on homosexuality have little to nothing to do with his competency as Secretary of Defense. As long as he's not actively bigoted or offensive, it's an unimportant detail. Some of these people need to sit down and shut up.
