Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Scandal Alert: Congress Is Quietly Abandoning the 5th Amendment
Kind of a follow up to the whole NDAA thing.
The problem is that instead of focusing on the problem (people deciding to go on nihilistic and frequently suicidal sprees of violence), gun-control advocates focus on guns. Guns are not the problem, they just magnify the problem. It should be completely possible to address the problem without also kicking legitimate gun owners in the balls, but gun control advocates generally aren't interested in doing so, which makes gun rights advocates oppose everything they say as a knee-jerk reaction.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Taoist: I am not sure where you got that blurb I was pointing out that if both officers, who were already alerted in case you missed that, to an armed attacker had engaged him at the same time their chances of knocking him down and ending it would have gone up drastically. Notice he did not attack anyone with guns funny that seems to be the case a lot.
Instead he chose a spot he knew would have no one who was armed and enacted his plan. He didn't target anyone who could stop him. He targeted those whou could not fight back effectively so he could do as much damage as possible. Funny how that works. Always selecting targets that can't really fight back or have little or no active protection against such a threat. Gee that doesn't sound familiar at all.
Here is another common theme. The vast majority of these spree shooters needed some serious mental health care help. Not just pill popping but serious mental help. If anything our horrifically broken health care system contributes more to our violence issues then our weapons.
Who watches the watchmen?Wait, I'm confused. Did he shoot someone who tried to pull a gun on him or not?
Anyways, you won't get an argument from me on asking for mental health services, but going after the "cray cray" isn't the same problem and shouldn't be treated as such
. There are cultural arguments

edit: Honestly I wouldn't say she doesn't deserve to win. It's not often one person manages to torpedo an entire presidential campaign. She was also fairly influential on our culture at the time even if it's for the wrong reasons.

Hasan shot someone who was actively firing at him (the first officer on the scene) The second officer on the scene was fired on by Hasan after he asked for Hasan to surrender. Hasan did not verbally respond but instead turned and fired at the second officer who returned fire (at this point he was likely already aimed in on Hasan when he issued the command to surrender) the second officer was on target and dropped Hasan and then disarmed him while he lay on the ground wounded. Everyone else was unarmed.
Some tried to use random objects as weapons but it was rather ineffective. He was physically attacked in kind by unarmed soldiers and one civilian. Everyone who tried that approach got shot.
It is more then just going after the insane it is making sure people can get the help when they need it. I can agree we also have a huge cultural issue with mental health and stigmatizing it to the point no one wants to get said help.
Who watches the watchmen?Okay, so the two officers approached him separately rather than as a pair? Just trying to get the events straight.

Part of it for me is the rather Hysterical, Conspiracy theorist air that that article has. Especially since the indefinite detention part of NDAA has been repealed. It just feels like something written from an shed in the rural backwoods, by someone with an unhealthy amount of weaponry, and a desire to take on big gubmint when it comes to take away our freedoms.
I won't say I'm not disturbed by pushes such as NDAA and the Patriot act, but we've suffered worse violations of civil liberties. It calls for contentiousness objection, not blind panic. Hopefully now that we're getting into more of a peacetime, war-weary mood, we can roll back some of that shit.
Already heard and got angry about it. Old news.

She was hit three times. Once by a fragment from a round that hit something else, the fragment hit her in the hand. She had one bullet hit her knee and the other hit her thigh which shattered her femur. She fell over and was then quickly disarmed by Hasan.(She survived if you were wondering)
The second officer arrived a short time later and ordered Hasan to surrender. Hasan turned and fired on him. The officer fired back. Hasan was hit five times and critically injured. He passed out shortly after being hit. He was captured after that.
It is widely considered in the military that the casualties would have likely been higher had the armed officer not stopped Hasan at that point.
Now I am not saying arm everyone or even arm teachers that just doesn't work out in consideration for the quality of the shooters. But ensuring some form of armed protection is on hand or nearby can help stop rampages from progressing further.
Also improving our mental health care (seriously as it exists now is rather frightening) and making sure people can access it or get others access to it when needed would go a long ways to helping. I am also think adding in a mental health requirement for fire arms ownership should be be paired with your background check.
Of course withour polictical climate it will be a cold day in hell before any of this really happens.
Who watches the watchmen?@ Nettacki and Deviant: What would you like to hear? How do you propose to attack a violation of civil liberties without emotional vitrol, seeing as there isn't as big a discourse on it?
I'm against it and the other people are too. Great.
