Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Teachers might literally be gunning for him?

This is what's happening today. One of the interviewees on MSNBC thinks it's bad that they've taken to press conferences instead of private discussions because it means things aren't getting done now. There seems to be minor revolt on the Republican side, but I think they're going to keep saying no at this point. Eesh.

Good. Better that both sides continue to say no than that we reach a "compromise" that harms Americans but is treated as a victory by one or both sides.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"gj.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryYou know this is exactly what I was saying earlier. Arming the fuck out of everyone probably won't solve a damn thing, it will just make tragedies more likely to happen since people could fly off the handle and reach for the nearest deadly object. What if this kid got pissed and actually did open fire on several people? Ugh...

Our level of education in the US is abysmal. I'd rather we work on making that tougher. That... was the biggest failure of common sense I've ever seen.
You live your life in fear and paranoia, if you keep asking questions like that. What if my brakes fail when I drive home in the afternoon? What if the guy next to me can't drive? Etc. etc. Etc.
If something bad is headed for you, there is nothing you can do about it except be prepared.

Glove and Boots is good for Blog!To do that we'd have to have funding for education but the same people advocating we give guns to everyone are against that.
I don't live my life that way. Also I think the person that feels the need to bring a gun with them everywhere is a heck of a lot more paranoid than me.
edit: Again, even if I had a gun I doubt I would be prepared for a shooter. It's just the way things fucking are which is why I see no point in ever owning one.

Neither do I. But guess what? You're acting paranoid when you start going down that road.
The simplest thing to do is be a parent and not blame inanimate objects. Again, better education.
Glove and Boots is good for Blog!
How am I being paranoid? The kid had a gun he shouldn't have had and almost started something. It's not irrational on my part.
I do blame the parents and I also blame the kid. I also see the gun as the murder weapon it is and do not want it in the hands of a mentally undeveloped individual that is prone to emotional outbursts over minor slights.
In light of recent events, I don't think it's paranoia to be concerned when people are giving guns to kids or suggesting that teachers walk around schools with guns. It's not paranoia, it's very reasonable concern that anyone would suggest or do such a thing. And this dumbass kid actively threatened another, so why are people suggesting we buy more guns to arm more people when all this is going to do is scare the hell out of children and lead to more harm? Jesus.
Those parents need a slap in the face and the kid deserves expulsion for that stupid stunt.
Which is why I just said that better education was necessary for the child and the parents.
The first rule for any child is that GUNS ARE NOT TOYS.
There's four simple rules for any child who encounters a gun.
1. Stop what you're doing. 2. Don't touch the gun. 3. Leave it and move away from the area of a gun. 4. Tell an adult that it is there.
This child literally violated all four because of the stupidity of either his parents and himself.

I know that but that doesn't change the fact that some people will always be stupid and do not deserve to have guns.
edit: Teaching only works if the kids are willing to learn and agree with you. Someone in the editorial for my paper had a good point. Make owning guns socially unacceptable like smoking or drunk driving. Peer pressure can be a powerful tool when used properly. Granted it won't stop all violence but it could help a lot.

Alright, mending something I misread:
The parents didn't encourage the kid to bring the gun to school
He made the claim they did. The gun was actually left at their house by a family member over the weekend.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FrySome of the comments are saying that. I guess follow up is needed.
Still say the kid needs suspension and some time attended in one of those special classes they use for offenders. Shit. My brother was in one for different reasons but I can't remember what it was called. Basically they literally watched the kids every minute.
Edit: Alternative school.... I guess it doesn't have a particular name other than alternate.

Police are investigating if the parents told him to or not.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryThe owner of the gun needs a serious punch in the face, too. You don't leave your guns lying around.
Biggest mistake you'll ever see. People leave them out, even if they have a proper storage unit for them.
What causes the most security problems at airports? People who forgot that they were using their locking luggage as a container for their gun and just put clothes in there and took it to the airport without remembering it was in there.

...To be honest, the non-religious vote being high, but dropping between last election and this election, is systemic of the younger voters liking Obama, but less so than last election, as the majority of the non-religious demographic is young.
