Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Norquist has gotten what lately? The last I heard of him he was claiming his pledge was about "accountability". Nevermind that in practice it worked more like a fealty pledge and was a preemptive cutting off of options that politicians need to do their jobs. So yeah, fuck that guy. I wish the media would just ignore that moron.
Krugman mentions capital gains and dividends at the end of his article. What exactly do dividends have to do with anything? Are those taxed as well? (Sorry, I don't know what many of these words mean.)
Serocco, as much as I agree that Obama has the advantage right now, I think you're overestimating that advantage. He still has to deal with the Congress, there's still a significant chunk of people that voted against him, and there's probably dozens of factors we're unaware of right now.

If they give block it, then I won't do a thing and go off the cliff.
The majority matters. Right now, the Americans chose the Democrats in the Senate. The Americans chose Obama over Romney. Sure, the Republicans have the House, but after suffering losses like that, they risk losing even more seats in 2014 if they keep being obstructionist.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Yes. Dividends are a form of income to shareholders. When people say that corporations are taxed twice, what they mean is that the profits the corporations receive are taxed, and any money given to shareholders is then taxed as income for those shareholders.
Likewise, if you realize a capital gain by selling stock, that's also taxed.
Grover Norquist is plotting.
Called it.
@ Serocco,
Even though I disagree with your position, I admire your 'don't fuck with me' attitude. We need more of that in Washington.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Just as a point of interest, you guys know that the second (or any, for that matter) amendment can't actually be removed, right? Only papered over with another amendment like the twenty-first did the eighteenth. And, honestly, I don't think that removing the right to own guns is a good idea or even remotely feasible for may of the same reasons that a a number of folk use against the banning of drugs. I do think better restrictions on assault weapon sales, and especially high capacity clips are the real way to some kind of progress.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Wow, what a bunch of bullshit hot air that man spouts. Though his comments about the sequester makes me hope the Democrats manage to put in some limits on that and filibustering in the next session.
Okay, so taxing dividends are obviously important, since they're income and income is always taxed anyway for most people.
okay, I'm a bit confused about what those have to do with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, but I don't really object to funding those projects. That's... a confusing situation right there.

So Congress is budgeting as they always have.

"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."Univision had an interview with Obama over what he views himself as. You know how Roosevelt called himself a center-left liberal? Obama said that, if he had the same policies here, but in the 80s, "I'd be considered a moderate Republican
."

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.TIME FOR A SONG:
Kid: Hey, who left all this garbage on the steps of Congress?
Amendment: I'm not garbage.
(starts singing)
I'm an amendment-to-be, yes an amendment-to-be,
And I'm hoping that they'll ratify me.
There's a lot of gun-owners,
Who have got too much freedom,
I want to make it legal
For policemen to seize 'em.
Cause there's limits to our liberties,
At least I hope and pray that there are,
'Cause those Con-serva-freaks go too far.
(spoken)
Kid: But why can't we just make a law against gun ownership?
Amendment: Because that law would be unconstitutional.
But if we changed the Constitution...
Kid: Then we could make all sorts of crazy laws!
Amendment: Now you're catching on!
Kid: What if people say you're not good enough to be in the Constitution?
(sings)
Amendment: Then I'll crush all opposition to me,
And I'll make John Boenher pay.
If he fights back, I'll say that he's gay.
(spoken)
Congressman: Good news, Amendment! They ratified ya!
You're in the US Constitution!
Amendment: Oh yeah!
This what I'm parodying BTW:
Wait which Roosevelt said that?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016John Boehner's fiscal cliff ‘Plan B’ going nowhere in Senate
You know what? Nobody on either side's going to say it, so I'll say it.
I think Boehner is doing a really good job. The man's walking a tightrope here. That he's managed to keep negotiations going this far is frankly impressive.
Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.![]()
He's doing a better job than Mc Conell is, but that's some very faint praise.

You seem to forget that even when Democrats had a supermajority, they still didn't do the most important things,...they half-assed the stimulus and didn't get the public option, despite the supermajority
We cannot forget this.
Let's just be glad the GOP is actually caving for once, even if it's not by much.

Yeah, @terlwyth what prompted that comment?
