Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Where is the people who actually mandate these laws saying that? What somebody says on a blog or youtube isn't necessarily what is going to be put on the books.
There are already laws saying what kind of guns people are allowed to buy now, and machine guns and artillery are already in the hands of some people in the general public.
No one can buy a new machine gun, not since 1986. The ones out there are just those that existed before then.

Glove and Boots is good for Blog!If someone (of real political significance) ever suggested we radically change one of our Amendments, chaos would ensue throughout the land. Cats would bark and dogs would meow. The nation's milk would all instantly go sour. The sun would be forever engulfed by the night, and the streets would run blue with the blood of the innocent.
Or bought on the black market.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Here's the problem of changing the second amendment. It doesn't say guns or muskets or bazookas or swords or tanks. It says "arms". Right now, the most modern arms are those that are used now - we don't use machine guns, although we could and for many decades, we did.
The laws have to determine what are arms without violating what is at its most core in our basic ideals, the amendments.
Hilariously, under law, the muskets and rifles at the writing of the Bill of Rights are not even considered arms any more.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016In other news, a large number of desks collapsed today. Officers on the scene have noted the desks seemed to have incurred a large amount of force. Many owners of these desks were sent to the hospital with minor injuries to the forehead and were later released.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Obama's next budget proposal? It includes $400 billion in cuts to health care programs, including Medicare
.
I warned you guys.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/18/the-deal-dilemma/
Read it. It explains the political calculus.
The argument has been made, fairly convincingly, that going over the cliff isn't an immediate and irreversable disaster. The reasons Republicans want to cave now, if that is indeed what they're doing, is because supposedly that after the cliff they'd be in a far worse bargaining position than they are now. It's not really about a vendetta, it's about Democrats and Obama proving to the Republicans they're not putting up with this constant blocking of any progress whatsoever. And finally managing to get them to come to the table with something and do their damn jobs.
Also, some people are, currently, questioning the Second Amendment. MSNBC anchors, with some of the sentiments in congresspeople if not the words. It's... kind of surreal. But yeah, the argument is being made that we shouldn't let ourselves be bound too closely by a law made when the most advanced thing we had was a musket that took several minutes to reload. I've mentioned before how much technology has changed. A law that can't change in the face of social and technological changes probably isn't a law worth keeping.

Total Social Security cuts would be at $112 billion dollars. That's $1,272 per yea, picked out of your pocket.
If you were on Social Security for over 30 years, that would cost you $28,000 with these laws.
Furthermore, the "Chained CPI", as listed in Obama's plan, raises taxes on the middle class instead of the rich.
I say again. I warned you.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Of course the Social Programs are getting cut.
That's inevitable at this point, no matter what rout we take.
Still...
Part of me thinks we should take the grand bargain just to see the fit the Tea Party and Norquist throw when Boehner raises taxes. Speaking of Norquist he's gotten really quite lately. I wonder if he's plotting anything.
@ Serocco
And if you were in Obama's place what rout would you have taken?
....Is this a good or bad thing?

Never going to happen. There would be rioting and violence.
Also an assault rifle ban would do nothing, since most people dont even know what the term means.
