The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Maybe with enough R&D. If Newt Gingrich were President (and not an asshole), maybe. [lol]

I'm still confused about Benghazi.

[up] terrorists attacked our consulate and killed several people there. originally it was(probably) thought to be a protest turned violent.

Which is enough to apparently be grounds for impeachment according to conservatives.

The grounds for impeachment thing is because Obama apparently did nothing and then lied to the public. Both are false, obviously.

I believe there are also stats out there about Bush having tons more deaths at various bases happen under his watch. Does anybody know more about that?

The timeline, lead up, and aftermath of the Benghazi attack is so confusing and convoluted it would make your head spin.

They also act like there is some massive conspiracy when at worst it was a fuck up of information.

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#44184: Dec 17th 2012 at 5:22:24 PM

What is confusing about the timeline? It seems pretty straightforward to me and most of the things that are a potential scandal are the result of incomplete information.

[up]I still haven't figured out what this alleged conspiracy is covering up. That 4 people died? No shit.

No there was more to it than that. I believe they were saying he tried to cover up the fact that he let them die without doing anything. This is entirely ignoring the fact that there's a giant fucking crowd right outside the place that would make it hard to get men into position.

US senator (D-HI) and President pro tempore of the Senate Daniel Inouye dead at 88

Inouye was the most senior senator at the time of his death. He was also the second longest serving U.S. Senator in history after Robert Byrd.

That is quite a loss.

So who will head the appropriations committee?

Always a pity to see an elder statesman like that go.

So Hawaii's governor gets to appoint his replacement? I assume the Democrats will keep it in the short and long term, Hawaii is pretty damn blue.

After Vermont, its the Bluest State in the Union.

Michael Dukakis says he's not headed to the Senate

Former Governor Michael S. Dukakis declined this afternoon to completely rule out a temporary appointment to the US Senate, though he called it unlikely because of a teaching obligation.

Huh, Dukakis is still alive.

If a Senate seat becomes vacant, the Governor appoints a replacement if the State's legislature is not in session, otherwise the legislature appoints the Senator. I believe Hawaii's legislature is in adjournment, unless the Governor were to call a special session.

My mistake. The Governor may appoint a temporary replacement to sit until a special election is held, if the legislature passed a law saying the Governor can. That's in the 17th Amendment.
