The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Humans can cause environmental damage through both action and inaction. By not hunting the deer, we cause widescale environmental damage that will take ages to repair when it's easily prevented now by a few hunting rifles.

@Serrocco - Country legend states that you have to be very hungry to eat a fox. Their fur used to be useful, though.

We can also lose over 30% of rice via climate change.

Among other things, that means less and more expensive sushi.

Research shows that we MUST reduce emissions by 2020. If we don't, we're gonna see stronger Sandys in the near future.

[up][up][up][up] How about we stop letting hunters go after wolves and such so the the eco system takes care of itself LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO.

We need to reduce emissions, number one.

Number two, we need mass conversion to nuclear power generation. We need rapid adoption of energy-efficient appliances and buildings, electric vehicle usage and other means of reducing fossil fuel use.

Forget fossil fuel. Not only is it gonna be rendered obsolete, but it's one of the only ways we can insure reduction of ice melting and sea level rising.

[up] Thank you. Clinton banned assault weapons back in the day, so we should do the same now.

Speaking of Clinton, he's also speaking out about climate change. It would've helped if he said that during his presidency, though.

What? Sushi?! No, not Sushi!

If rice is more expensive, you'd think the Chinese would start investing in green energy in a major way-oh wait-

[up] Exactly. It'll still exist and in relatively mass production, but western contact with rice-related food will suffer the most, because it'll be more expensive to get it, and thus, more expensive to eat.

We can stop that before it goes into effect, though, but in a world where money matters most, I don't see how anyone currently in power will do so. Well, currently, at least.

Hunters can't go after wolves most places, but even if they could, wolves wouldn't be good to have in most of the areas that deer are a real issue. It's not so much the foods that they're decimating as suburbia and farmland.

Committee staff is gearing up for hearings on the subject, citing recent concerns from the AAA motor club, automakers and the oil industry that the rule is pushing a high-ethanol fuel blend onto the market they say will damage cars.

For crying out loud...attention, car companies: You adapt to this by selling more engines and other car parts that will wear out faster because of this, not by trying to stop laws that will help the environment.

Seriously, this is like if Captain Planet's villains were smarter.

Can't you just find ways to make car parts that won't be damaged? It seems like a simple matter to me.

All mechanical parts wear out eventually, that's why they need servicing.

@ Serocco:

Most environmentalists are against Nuclear Power as well, as well as an increasing number of Governments, especially after the Fukushima incident. They want to use renewable forms of energy instead. I guess we'll have to get used to the lights going out.

[up]I know. Maybe I'm misreading the article but the problem here seems to be that the fuel is damaging the parts faster. Couldn't you make more resilient parts?

I'm not an expert and I'm guessing, but maybe. It'll certainly cost more, though, which will mean a higher cost for the customer. Not just for cars, remember: vans, trucks and buses will cost more too.

I wonder how much it would raise the cost. There probably aren't any sources on this.

@Kostya: It's a two-part process. For one, friction between moving parts makes them wear out faster, especially if you don't change your lubrication often enough.

For another, gasoline is a solvent and does contribute to wear as well.

Actually, as a bit of a car guy, they do have a point. The ethanol eats away at fuel tanks because of a reaction with air, and screws up some engines(mainly marine engines).

To reduce emissions, they're already having to put Urea into the exhaust. It's powerful stuff.

Ethanol was a fuel source waaaaaay back when cars were first starting up and gas stations weren't widespread. People were just looking for whatever would get their engines running back then. But for similar reasons, it obviously fell out of favor.
