Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

With arming the teachers...bad idea. You'll get the constant budget cuts, the kids who will do their absolute best to antagonize everyone, the parents who are furious that their precious angel isn't doing well and so on. Essentially, at its worst, teaching is a massively stressful job. You also get the kids who can get through any lock given enough time. I've known a few like that.
If we get a deal to raise taxes on the rich, that'll mean Obama agreed to cut the social programs.
If we raises taxes while also cutting spending, that still won't help the economy. It's like drinking Dayquil and Nyquil at the same time. That's number one.
Number two, we need to raise rates all the way up to 39% in order to achieve any sort of growth, economically and job-wise. The raise that Obama and Baehner propose won't be enough.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. Before they were refusing to raise taxes, offering instead to 'close financial loopholes'. So this is an improvement.
But aren't we currently experiencing economic growth? And unemployment is (slowly) falling.

We had a case two years ago when a stressed-out teacher battered a kid with a 1.5kg dumbbell. The kid survived - and the teacher ended up with a community service order (probation) when it turned out the pupil had deliberately planned to goad the teacher.
Now, suppose that teacher had been one of the 'Concealed Carry' teachers? Would we have been looking at another multiple classroom shooting?

It ain't over 'till the ring hits the lava.
x4 Bullets are easy to make at home. That rule would just have people make their own ammo. It's very easy.
Besides, if you take away all the guns and ammo, you'll kill the environment of the midwest within a decade. We'll be a complete dustbowl. We have huge issues with deer overpopulation killing the foliage as it is even with hunting licenses.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickShima: Why would the deer be a problem now? They've lived there for thousands of years without people shooting them.

That doesn't mean people won't do it.
I get that but why is this a concern now? Shouldn't it be a dustbowl already since us killing them en masse is relatively new?

I still think gun laws should be decided by individual states.
So long as
A. They don't ban guns completely (and thus violate the constitution).
and B. Have at least a 48 hour waiting period, so the Gun Shop can run a background check.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Serocco: They eat plants which makes the soil sandy and prone to being blown around by winds. This causes deadly dust storms.
Deviant: Isn't that what we already have? Training and a longer period of time or no and make it a federal requirement.
L Mage: Why though? People want taxes to come up on them. There are also polls that say if we go over it will be their fault, not Obama's.

Yes but what does that have to do with the deer? They are causing problems too.
edit: I should note that I'm not opposed to using guns for hunting (even though I personally wouldn't do it) so long as the person actually eats the meat. Wasting food like that bothers me.
Also the hunter and his family would need to go through the training and stuff.

We might lose wheat via climate change.
Actually, no. "Might" implies we can change it. I think the better term is - we will lose wheat via climate change.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.

The most important sentence was the very first.
To paraphrase: "If Obama agrees to cutting the social programs, the Republicans will raise taxes on the rich."
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.
