Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

which indicates that those who own firearms legally been to be made to keep them in a much more secure fashion so that they cannot be stolen. Or better yet make it so people can't store a firearm in a house where someone who would not be granted a licence lives (with a obvious exception for keeping them in a house with children).

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranCoulter has. Granted she's not in any position to make this a reality but she is employed by a network that provides "news" for a large segment of the population. The fact that people aren't automatically screaming for her to be taken off the air is worrying.

I gotta wonder why the NRA isn't in favor of mandatory training for gun owners, though. I mean, most of the teachers are NRA members, so wouldn't it just increase their business?
Is there some kind of weed that drowns out sanity in this country?
@ states letting the Government handle Obamacare regulation: I've always had the thought that the state governments wanted the government to handle it fail and then start pointing out that the feds couldn't even handle it.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
x7 There already ARE laws against people failing to store their guns safely, the problem is when they get loose. Again, most criminals get their firearms through straw purchases, meaning that the people buying them are already in trouble if they get caught.
We don't know how Adam Lanza got the guns. Did Adam Lanza murder his mother and then take her guns? Did he borrow them from his brother without saying anything? We don't know yet.
Jacob Tyler Roberts stole his guns, but we have no further information than that.
It's also not that difficult to break into many of the locked cases where people keep their weapons.
Under what circumstances would it be safe to allow people to own firearms if someone else in the area is not deemed "psychologically safe"?
If I rent a room in a home where I know nothing of the state of mind of the other tenants, does that make me responsible for the psychological well-being of a roommate?
Should everyone in the United States be submitted to psychological testing, "just to be safe"?

Doesn't matter. You want anything more than a BB gun you should have to get training.
besides, non-rifle is anything smooth bore, or handguns. besides shot guns, if they made that law someone would just start making smooth bore semi-automatics.

I'm baaaaaaackPretty much every non-gun weapon has a reason behind owning it other than killing things. Also guns are pretty much the most efficient method out there for killing large numbers of people.
edit: Most efficient method that a large amount of people would have access to at least.

your not supposed to have ones with blades longer than 2 inches on your person in public. beyond that, IDK. Also, no switch blades.
One thing I realized recently- whats the problem with switch blades? how much more dangerous are they than someone with a normal knife of the same length hidden in his coat?

I'm baaaaaaackThe physical limitations of other weapons, even those that are "less-than-lethal" are the reasons why firearms are still the most efficient for those reasons. And, of course, anything can be misused.
Stun guns are not "non-lethal" as much as people would believe otherwise. There are a number of unfortunate incidents where even Police have inadvertently killed people.

Nunchucks are illegal in California, at least. What's funny is that a three-section staff is not illegal.

Most states have legislation regarding the kind of blades that can be carried in public - length, type, etc.
Simply put, they were used in crimes at some point (and therefore, a "public menace" even if it's a small percentage of crime). For example, the reason why nunchucks were made illegal in California was a rash of armed robberies with nunchucks in San Francisco back in the 1970s, etc. and legislation was passed to make them illegal to own by a private citizen (it's legal to possess if it is only contained in a martial arts dojo). Specifically for the switchblade, The Other Wiki can tell you all about it and how the media portrayed it here
.

Glove and Boots is good for Blog!I imagine a good part of the reason for the items being banned could be attributed to media hype as well. Simple workarounds can make a switchblade legal (though you don't call it a "switchblade") and a simple improvised device like a steel pipe/lock and chain can make for an equal or better substitute for nunchaku at a fraction of the cost while remaining perfectly legal.
Here's the relevant part of California law, if anyone's curious.

Nevermind that deaths caused by guns have fallen to a record low in the last ten years, while gun ownership has been at an all time high. There's more guns in the United States than there are cars on the road, etc.
Nevermind that the two high profile gun crimes this week were caused by people stealing firearms illegally.
Under no means should people let their emotions dictate how they proceed.
