The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

My old ma has a saying - when it rains, up come the worms.

Every American tragedy seems to prove this over and over again. Like Falwell blaming the ACLU for 9/11, or the left-wing crazies blaming PNAC, all the way to Mike Huckabee blaming the separation of church and state or right-wing crazies blaming gun control for school shootings.

It sickens me. Why do these people keep coming back? What will it take for a national discussion mature enough to turn around and say: "Your opinions have no merit. Preach to your choirs whilst we table more important discussions."?

it'll take their choirs not being the people who are practically guramteed to be easily whipped into a fervor and charge for the polls.

if some black kid got shot in the inner city. theyll get maybe 5 seconds of airtime, a fake frown of sympathy from the news anchors, then be forgotten.

Tell it to Trayvon Martin.

Did I miss 2?

Well there was the Oregon Mall Shooting, but I have no idea what the other one.

Since I still don't see a thread on the shooting, I'm forced to ask this here:

Did we ever find the perpetrators? Tragedy aside, I could see people trying to understand just what led to this, but that's very difficult if the persons in questions are unknown.

Oh well. Yet more evidence that the federal government should just ignore the states and run these things itself. Seriously though why do individual states need these things? Just make a federal database for this information. That way it's all concentrated in one place.

States rights. The conflict between Federal and State power will always be a thing in America.

The government gave states the option to run it themselves and they declined. My sympathy is low.

so in completely unsurprising news, apparently Ann Coulter has suggested the shootings wouldnt have happened if everyone on school grounds were allowed to have conceal and carry permits.

Why the fuck does anybody take them seriously? I can understand wanting to arm teachers even if I think it's stupid but giving children guns? Yeah, that won't backfire. It's not like kids aren't prone to hurting themselves by playing around!

because that would be sane. and everyone knows every study ever has shown injecting more guns magically lowers the incidence of shootings on school grounds.

or at least every study Ann is claiming to have seen.

I'm going to step back from the gun debate and post something from the comments of that article you linked.

There are Christmas trees in Connecticut with presents under them bearing the names of children who will never open them.

Oh yeah...

sad

I understand that. But thats all the more reason for me to be pissed off about people who think praying in school or arming teachers with glocks is going to magically save children.

I'd rather not let more children have unopened christmas presents because some goddamn religious lunatic or gun nut seriously thinks that their freedom to own an assault rifle or shove jesus down every throat in america means jack shit to me when kids are dead.

Does anybody know of a place to find current stats on gun deaths and ownership? I'm looking for stuff within the last year or two but I want to avoid some partisan site.
