The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well that's lame.

And just where is the talk about the Connecticut shooting supposed to go? It's only tangentially relevant to US politics.

How is Bobby Jindal a common sense Repub? He blamed Obama for the Katrina aftermath,....even though any other person including an insane Tea-Partier could tell you Bush dropped the ball on that one.

The key phrase was "in the Republican party". People who blame Obama for everything are a dime a dozen. It's a comparative thing.

How can he blame Obama for Katrina? Not only wasn't he president, Obama was barely a blip on the political radar at the time?

I'm for over the counter birth control. There's a lot of countries that do that. They have fewer side effects than allergy meds.

So what exactly could he have done? It's not like it was his home state.

That's not exactly what happened....

In a response to Obama's 2009 speech to a joint session of Congress, Jindal used Hurricane Katrina to warn against government solutions to the economic crisis. "Today in Washington, some are promising that government will rescue us from the economic storms raging all around us," Jindal said. "Those of us who lived through Hurricane Katrina, we have our doubts." He also praised the late sheriff Harry Lee for standing up to the government during Katrina

That sounds like a really smooth, heartstrings-tugging way of using an example of non-interventionist government to reject government interventionism.

[up] Well Jindal's speech was not all that liked, so I think other people noticed that

"Some conservative needs to start a campaign to fire whoever wrote this cheesy response and coached him to talk like this," wrote conservative columnist Amanda Carpenter on the popular social networking Web site Twitter. "I can't watch."

I wish Limbaugh had lost more credibility than he had during the Fluke incident. I'm tired of hearing about him and his moronic ramblings.

Refusing to cover birth control and abortion? Srsly?

It's probably just because I never paid the details of their company much attention, but Domino's never struck me as a particularly ideological place.

The guy is Catholic, so it makes since from that perspective.

OTOH, Dominos is a public company.....

It looks like all my favorite fast food places are taking GOP-friendly ideological stances. I can handle no PJ, Chick-Fil-A or Domino's, but if Popeye's goes next I'll be in trouble.

[up][up] Most places refused to cover birth control before Obamacare. They'd cover ob/gyn stuff, but not the actual pills.
