Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Okay. Because I don't believe anything in the NY Post without corroboration.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, that's a great way to spend your afternoon. Sheesh. And given the number of deaths it's going to be really hard to credibly make the argument that he would have done this without access to firearms.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I've been watching NBC about it. They didn't put up anyone's face, they just updated the information as it came in. And admitted to when they weren't entirely sure about things. *shrug*
This keeps happening. so I'm wondering why we're so resistant to gun control these days. I mean, i know why Republican politicians are, but not the general public.
Frankly I think this is a case of tyranny of the minority; the pro-gun crowd is so vocal that it dominates the conversation. And I also believe that the second amendment may be the worst one we've got.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The second amendment was written in a time when A) Invasion by England was still a valid concern and B) we were dealing with Indian raids out on the frontier. It was a VASTLY different culture, not to mention that the technology is far beyond what they were dealing with back then.
It's valid to consider whether or not the second amendment is even valid in this day and age. And how far it should go when shit like school shootings happen. Hell, no one seems to consider the "amendment" part and realize that hey, we can totally change that if we see fit.
I think it's that in "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." the 1st sentence has been forgotten.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAnd the general population can be trusted to remain calm when someone starts shooting? And to somehow not escalate a bad situation further and cause more death?
You do get those crazies that seem to think they can outgun the federally organized army and the FBI. Which has led to some baaaad situations.

@Kostya: " I was going to bring up the militia part. When did that get twisted around to mean any random Joe on the street?"
You can pretty much blame the Supreme Court for that.. It's an example of Judicial activism by so-called conservative "originalists".
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()
At the time the original Bill of Rights was written, there was no Federal army responsible for arming the soldiers, and so the armed forces and militias were made up of volunteers from the citizenship, who would have to bring most of their own guns and gear. And so, private ownership of firearms was to be allowed.
So yes, random Joe on the street would be allowed to own firearms.

Glove and Boots is good for Blog!Someone who would murder a classroom of kindergarten children is beyond anything we would classify as sane, so asking why he did a particular odd thing is somewhat moot.
It is worth pointing out that firearms are, indeed, not to blame for this tragedy. The person killing kids is the one responsible. That said, firearms make killing easier and faster, and as such we have to be willing to have a serious national conversation about how to deal with the issue.
What makes this conversation impossible to have is when people grandstand on issues of principle, ignoring the reality of what's right in front of them.

@Fighteer: Fox and CNN are confirming it as well now. They got the wrong Lanza sibling. The one thats been reported as a monsterous killer all week is actually still in Hoboken wondering wtf is going on.
