Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

No, no, havent you heard? Compassionate Conservatism is back!!
Here is an interesting analyis
of the failure by the RP to successfully adopt any form of actual compassionate conservatism, by a former Bush official who believes in it.
Cynical thought: they've realized that faking compassion is less effective than simple voter suppression for the amount of time and work needed.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.I seem to recall that Krugman was in the running for a position on the Council of Economic Advisers in 2009, but was rejected due to being "too liberal" — they thought he would rock the boat too much when the administration was trying to play the centrist card.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Speaking of the Devil, Krugman has a nice blog post today
about the deficit, and why it's nowhere near a big a deal as people claim.
Well, regarding the the shooting this morning, looks like two fun political debates are about to spawn.
Another round of Gun control, and the insanely hilarious yet not possibility that the wrong Ryan Lanza has had his photo plastered all over CNN and Fox news despite the one in said photo posting multiple times after his supposed death and the fact Business Insider.com has apparently contacted him for some comments.
You hear that? its the sound of hilarious libel suits over news organizations googling a name and going "eh, close enough"

The official news channels are upsetting me very much today. In between rounds of them bringing up their best Googling guesses on any vaguely tangentially related information on the shooting incident (because they have to be FIRST ON THE SCENE even if it's by a millisecond, so they can't actually wait to confirm any damn thing), they're assigning blame to video games (as usual) and... social networking media like, they specifically mentioned, Facebook. Because apparently having more ways to connect to people makes us more alienated from them and therefore willing to shoot them. Or something.
Not a word on how our culture handles mental health or firearm regulations though. Not a word.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed. It's just ridiculous. I sympathize with the people affected by the shooting but it's our own damn fault for having a political environment in which any attempt to propose a serious solution to these issues is shouted down with "HANDS OFF MAH GUNS DURR".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Like the NRA hasn't released a press announcement suggesting that things would have gone better if the teachers were armed. In fact, I'll bet they have a fill-in-the-blanks press release ready to go.
I really would not be surprised if the NRA already has released a statement saying "shoulda packed heat"
I do honestly believe that increasing tracking of what happens to guns, someone's purchasing patterns in regards to body armor and ammunition and firearms, would go a long way to keeping mass shootings like Aurora from happening.
They should say "Our condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. The NRA denounces the shooter." And nothing more. When the NFL player committed that murder-suicide, they said it was the victim's fault for not packing more heat. That sort of shit is what's getting them the reputation for being a heartless, whackjob organization.

Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryYou're believing something in the NY Post?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

We could always give Mittens the job. Hey, who cares about Britain, we're realigning to East Asia!
@Tricksterson: Right now, there is no such thing as a RINO, there are only the Tea Party and the silent moderates. Even Lisa Murkowski is marching in lockstep with the rest of the party.
