The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Eh, not that I'd be elated, but do consider that even if Brown gets elected again if he went lockstep GOP, he'd get crucified up here so fast you wouldn't even hear it, and he's just had a scare. You've got to answer to your constituency, and no matter the party up here in MA we're pretty liberal versus the rest of the country.

Of course putting a Republican in as Secretary of State isn't a bad thing. There is pretty much a foreign policy consensus between the two parties anyway. Romney gaffes aside.

GENIUS IDEA: Make deathpigeon Secretary of State. Then make Krugman Supreme Overlord of all the Economics.

... what? It's a better idea than making Boehner Secretary of State.

[up][up] There's too much risk of a Republican undercutting the president just to be spiteful if you didn't choose carefully. I would honestly pick McCain if I had a better understanding of his diplomatic background.

Actually why isn't Krugman appointed in the Obama administration?

Brown is pretty much a RINO, the only type of Republican that can win up here, so even if he won the Republicans wouldn't be all that happy

Krugman is a lefty. The Obama administration is a centrist administration.

Would Krugman even take that sort of job? I mean, he is an economist, but I've never seen him angle for a political position. Not everyone that's qualified for a particular job actually wants it.

I've taken a war-based economics class and I've learned that you should have a diverse group of advisers covering multiple fields, and the leader should carefully discern among them to make decisions.

If Obama is willing to keep Bush's secretary of defense and select other cross-party members in his cabinet, then why not Krugman?

You keep talking like Krugman's actually angled for that sort of thing, Triv, and been rejected. Without answering my question of does the man even want that kind of job.

I think he would. He sure suggest a lot to help the economy; why not speak to people that have power to fulfill them?

Clinton's admin let in Robert Reich, and Reich is probably even farther left than Krugman.

Again, unless you give me some proof that Krugman is even trying to for a position like that then I'll take this consideration seriously. As it is, he's probably got a job he's happy with.

Obviously, the solution is to make Scott Brown the Secretary of State.

He'd definitely accept it and his long tenure on the Foreign Relations committee means he has the need contacts for the job.
