The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Is there the possibility of them switching to growing and producing more dangerous drugs to replace the profit loss? (organized crime isn't a subject I'm that knowledgeable on)

They're already peddling more dangerous drugs and making a profit off it.

I'm not sure how much this will affect cartels. I just think that legalizing pot will do these things: relieve the massive pressure on our prison systems that are incredibly overcrowded, stop clogging up courts stuffed full of drug cases which creates all sorts of stress on the system, and create a lot of taxable revenue and open up opportunities for potential private business owners.

We could just pull a Portugal and legalize all drugs. They've seen their drug use rates drop pretty quickly since they did that and they don't have to waste time and money locking people up.

[up] Actually, that's false. Marijuana Doesn't Cause Lung Cancer or Death.

I know they produce the others, I meant push more towards them to make up for the loss, and what effect that would have.

Marijuana Doesn't Cause Lung Cancer or Death.

That's still being disputed. I blame how politicized the issue has become.

I meant push more towards them to make up for the loss, and what effect that would have.

Possibly, they'll want to make up for loss profits.

I keep hearing this stuff about privatized prisons, and I need more detail. Because last I checked, the only person who thinks that's a good idea is the comic book villain from The Cape. Please tell me our legal system is not that stupid.

[up][up][up] True, but the larger studies on the subject show that it may prevent cancer instead of causing it. It's got to do with how the body processes THC. There's signs it may stop cancerous cells from becoming malignant.

As to the highly promising implication of his own study — that something in marijuana stops damaged cells from becoming malignant — Tashkin noted that an anti-proliferative effect of THC has been observed in cell-culture systems and animal models of brain, breast, prostate, and lung cancer. THC has been shown to promote known apoptosis (damaged cells die instead of reproducing) and to counter angiogenesis (the process by which blood vessels are formed — a requirement of tumor growth). Other antioxidants in cannabis may also be involved in countering malignancy, Tashkin said.

I've read that while it slows some forms of cancer, it advances others.

I've read that too.

I'm pretty sure that a careless use of a drug by smoking it is probably going to do some harm.

it's so hypocritical of the united states to have weed illegal, and yet fully support alcohol and tobacco consumption.

Alcohol and tobacco have been around longer than marijuana has. They're been grandfathered in and don't face the same stigma.

Note that attempts to ban alcohol and tobacco have been...less than successful.

In fairness, we tried to ban alcohol once.

[up]

Also what this guy said.

Its not that no one wants to ban alcohol and/or tobacco. Its just that we've reached the point were both substances are so mainstream that any attempts to ban them will fail miserably.

[up] And it led to a massive crime underground and an increase in alcohol consumption. Banning drugs only makes problems worse. It doesn't fix anything.

Why shouldn't we just legalize everything? All the studies show that it drops crime rates and drug consumption rates. It worked for Portugal.

And it'll severely drop the number of people in our prisons.

Only for certain drugs. I do not want to see crazy drugs on the market.

[up] Not true. It works on crazy drugs too. People seeing crack addicts is the biggest reason that the sales of the drug plummeted. Not police enforcement. Not any campaigning. People see the crazy drugs and decide that doing that shit is just dumb.

And keeping them illegal means people are less likely to seek treatment.

And it led to a massive crime underground and an increase in alcohol consumption.

Actually the latter is still being argued over. What is known is that Cirrhosis of the liver, normally a result of alcoholism, dropped nearly 2/3 during Prohibition.
