Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I sort of feared I had killed the thread with my links or something. *shrug*
The saddest thing here is the Republicans have things set up so that even other Republican contenders stand no chance. Unless the opposition, whoever that may be and whatever party they come from, has some damn good marketing Perry at this point is likely to retain his governorship in 2016. Or unless he decides for some reason not to run, but that's unlikely as he's relatively young and healthy.
You forget the election for governor of Texas is in the even off-years, which the next one is 2014.
Here is TheOtherWiki's article on it.
The only person currently slated to run against Perry is State Attorney General Greg Abbott.

Yeah, Texas is a bit of a hang 'em high state. But there was that issue with that Mexican guy and a lack of representation that drew a hell of a lot of criticism a few years back. He got criticized by Bush for denying the man legal representation. (I'm pretty sure that Bush and Perry might hate each other, actually.)
I personally am somewhat ambivalent and neutral on the issue of the death penalty. I do think we need to reduce the number of things that can land a person in jail, though.
When someone commits a crime at the kind of lengths that typically bring up the death penalty, I gotta say I'm not going to be too broken up about them being executed.
The main problems are 1) innocent people get condemned,
2) the appeals process to at least try and make sure that doesn't happen is so long and expensive that we'd be better off on all counts just imprisoning them for life, and 3) due process gets shat on a lot.

When I say reduce the number of things you can get arrested for, I mean "legalize pot and stop putting so many black men in jail just because they're black."
Also, stop this shit with private business prisons. That's really buggered the fuck out of our justice system.

Criminalizing Pot causes far more crimes than legalizing it would. Stoners don't tend to commit many crimes, unless we're talking fashion police or cooking. The people who do tend to cause crimes are drug cartels and pot growers especially in Mexico.
Speaking of Pot Legalization:
Former president Jimmy Carter OK with legalizing marijuana

It would kill a massive source of their funding very quickly because it would make it much harder for them to use it to fund their wars. It would also let the US have a new cash crop that can grow all over the country.
In addition it would also allow pot to be regulated for things like dangerous chemical additives.
They'll always exist, but without the high profit margins they'll have a lot less power.

I believe I've already answered that, deathpigeon. This is one of many reasons I'm eager for and excited that the demographics in my state are changing.
