The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ace of Spades: They say he did things that paved the way for the recession. They explained what they were once but I've forgotten. They're not exactly wrong since he did deregulate things but this completely ignores the fact that Bush had eight fucking years to fix it and he just made things worse. 9/11 I can somewhat understand. Their logic is that Clinton allowed conditions to form where something like this could happen and Bush was just unlucky enough to have moved into power before it happened.

I'm not sure why they hate Hillary for that other than them being traditional when it comes to marriage.

Yeah, your parents have a very skewed version of reality here.

They watch Fox News. What the hell do you expect?

[up]I know, and I also hate Clinton for doing that. It's a really rotten thing to do.

[down]I know. It doesn't change the fact that Bush made things worse and the current GOP is doing everything in its power to stop the recovery.

They say he did things that paved the way for the recession.

That's actually accurate.

Yeah, the deregulation has been happening pretty steadily regardless of who was in the hot seat.

He did do other stupid things while in power though. He's not a fantastic president by any stretch of the imagination but we've had far worse.

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#43258: Dec 9th 2012 at 5:55:09 PM

Tough question. For worst I'd say Nixon even if that's a somewhat cliche choice.

Best...that's harder for me. Washington, Lincoln, FDR, and Eisenhower were all very good presidents.

Best I'd say either Lincoln, Washington, or FDR. If you classify worst as "did the least amount of good", you could say that would be William Henry Harrison. tongue

Best is up there between Washington, Lincoln, FDR, and Teddy Roosevelt.

Worst is Andrew Jackson. He was one sick fucker, and flat out ignored the justice department more than once.

William Henry Harrison also did nothing to harm the country while in office so on that criteria he could be the best president as well.

Worst: I in particular hate Andrew Johnson . Herbert Hoover , George W Bush , Franklin Pierce , Ulysses S Grant , Woodrow Wilson , and James Buchanan were all pretty bad as well.

Best: I'd have to say Theodore Roosevelt

[up]

How did he harm the county?

"No one has a right to grade a President—even poor James Buchanan—who has not sat in his chair, examined the mail and information that came across his desk, and learned why he made his decisions."

[up][up][up]True. Though, his death did cause a constitutional crisis.

[up][up]I always heard that Hoover's terribleness was a bit overblown, and that he mostly inherited a crappy situation. Any merit in that?

[up][up][up] He didn't. He was only president ~30 days. He gave one speech and then died of pneumonia. He did nothing as president.

Jackson is probably the absolute worst president.

Hoover is overblown. He didn't cause the depression; he just went along with it and didn't try as hard as Roosevelt to deal with it.

He mishandled Bonus Army, though.

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#43267: Dec 9th 2012 at 6:05:46 PM

[up][up][up]Generally that's true. He made it worse though because he believed the government should just let the country recover on its own. That's why FDR is so well liked. He took over and completely reversed course.

[down]Honestly I don't think Kennedy did a whole lot that makes him deserving of the title. He did good things true but he also screwed up a lot of stuff.

True (to a degree). Coolidge, the Stock Market, and World War 1 were far more responsible for the Depression then anything Hoover did.

But Hoover still raised the tariffs (which helped spread the Depression across the world) and sent Mac Arthur and the army to deal with The Bonus Army.

It seems like while Hoover didn't cause the problems, he didn't really help things. Sounds like a poor job, but I don't think I'd call him the worst.

Worst: Jackson. Nixon was an arse (and corrupt) but Watergate doesn't compare to the Indian Removal Act.

Best: I'd have to say Washington, solely for setting the term limit precedent. FDR is up there, but he has an unexcusable major crime (Japanese internment) on his record.
