The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You have to keep in mind that the strength of a country for a teabagger is inversely related to the strength of their social programs.

Wouldn't he have thought that the Great Depression would've been the perfect example for why we need social programs?

Or am I asking too much from a Tea Partier?

Well the New Deal just made things worse so obviously social programs are terrible.

[up][up] far, far too much. Probably too much of even a normal republican. they'd probably say it was ww2 and the companies hiring more workers that solved the problem.

The New Deal was just getting started, and would be challenged by the Supreme Court in the years to come. This was basically the window of opportunity in which the hyperconservative wet dream of declaring Social Security unconstitutional could have been realized if they had the "right" justices.

Walsh probably sees that time frame as something of a What Could Have Been moment.

How long did the Minnesota Senate race from four years ago drag on again?

Minnesota in '08 lasted until July, although that was exacerbated by a court case.

Although to be fair, that case had Franken winning a statewide race by only a few hundred votes.

If Hillary got the nomination my parents would be pissed.

They hate the Clintons.

What's so offensive about the Clintons?

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#43248: Dec 9th 2012 at 5:07:21 PM

They blame Bill Clinton for the recession and 9/11 and think he's a morally bankrupt man because of the Monica Lewinsky thing.

Hillary is guilty by association for the most part although they do dislike that she kept her maiden name and that she was too involved in what her husband did during his term.

So. He's responsible for something that most sane people don't hold the actual president during that time responsible for. And they apparently don't recall he left his office with the country in a surplus that the next president then torpedoed. And they don't like Hillary because she kept her name and likes to be referred to as Hillary Rodham Clinton?

Yeah, your parents have a very skewed version of reality here.
