Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Just popped back in to post this: http://politicalwire.com/archives/2012/12/08/walkers_son_used_same_day_voter_registration.html
Charlie Crist is the former (Republican) governor of Florida. He ran for Senate in 2010 initially as a Republican, but changed his affiliation to "independent" after it became clear that he would have lost the Republican primary to Marco Rubio. This is largely because he was lambasted for being too moderate — he did things like supporting Obama's stimulus bill, which gave Rubio (one of the premiere Tea Party darlings) plenty of ammo against him. He came in second in the race — behind Rubio but ahead of the Democratic candidate. Had he been running against Rubio alone he probably would've won (Rubio received fewer votes than Crist + democrat), thus neatly demonstrating why our system doesn't allow for third party candidates.
There were rumors at the time that, as an independent, he would've caucused with the Democrats — and even that senior Democrats asked the Democratic candidate in the race to withdraw and clear the field for Crist — but I have no idea how true that was.
As an aside, this (from the article
) is awesome:

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
Well, it depends how much capital is required. Used robots start at about £4000. They may go cheaper yet.
As someone who's actually been kicked by a cow, I tend to think of the industrial revolution as A Good Thing.
The Comp Sci revolution may be more of the same.
Um, no. You're making an assumption that the amount of stuff the robots produce will remain constant.
If cost decreases, demand may balance out. Because if you have certain woozits that previously cost $100,000, and now cost $100, you'll need a lot more people to store the woozits, and sell the woozits to the retailers, and retail the woozits...
There are limits to this approach, of course (which is where supply-side economics falls down). My own country wandered into an Empire because we needed people who we could sell all this bloody stuff to.
