Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On the Romney thing, well,. the idealist side of me wants to hope that working in a food kitchen anonymously really has given Mitt some insight into just how brutally insensitive he (and his entire party) came off as.
after all, I think a lot of the top 1% really doesnt understand just what life is like at the bottom 1% and has absolutely no way in their normal life to even imagine it. Working in a food kitchen for the extremely poor would likely show you just how human and like you the poor really are.

@42873: Well, the Romneys certainly sound genuine in that article. Time will tell if being out of the public spotlight and the pressure of pandering to the conservative agenda makes them into human beings again.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
This. It sort of sounds that Mitt is only just realizing that the very bottom has so little they dont even know what the fuck a Car elevator is, or wouldnt comprehend why someone would have so many cars they would need one. And that realization has him going "Oh. Oh shit. I really did sound like an asshole."
That Ann was also able to admit Planned Parenthood isnt a baby-murdering evil cabal and were people who had good intentions just like she did also probably took some courage.

Well, the problem with business leaders is kind of the same thing why he now realizes why he lost. When you've lived your life in a world where you're always told you deserve all that money and prestige and respect, you dont really examine why some people dont have any of that.

I would have guessed that Romney would retire from politics after this election. Washington Post article here
says he shouldn't, but I'm not sure what he can do right now.
It's unfortunate that Romney's a party leader only up to election day. After the party pulling him for months, this election would be an opportunity to have his moderate origins tug the party, but it looks like he was quickly discarded from political influence after he lost.

I now go by Graf von Tirol.
It probably has something to do with the crushing realization after you're no longer politically important, that 99% of the people you thought were genuinely your friends no longer give a shit you exist.
After that you usually go looking for something more genuine.

Neither. It means that some politician is probably a closet*-troper, and took at look at OTC.
They probably saw how radical toaists, green psychoanalysts, starships, gleeful mad men, forum mods, lawyerdudes, midgetsnowmen, zeros, dead pigeons, aces, Earls, and the like all have different, and in some cases clashing, viewpoints and yet still kick it awesome-like.
Now they're trying to copy our style. Pfft.

It was an honor

Well, okay, I guess it's not really an ultimatum if he doesn't say what he'll DO-
