Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Congress strikes word 'lunatic' from US laws
The drone thing is a simple examination of failure. I would have some questions for the Marines who made the ID. I would also have some questions for the entire fucking mission that has been there a decade and, despite recognizing the importance of "hearts and minds" on paper, doesn't have enough local rapport to be able to confirm when some kids are picking up some dung just to heat their fucking homes. A lot of factors went into making that tragedy eventually inevitable, and it's one more rock on the mountain of evidence that we should go home, sooner than later.

Game Guru: Did you miss the fact that, when Serocco asked that flammable question, he hotlinked it to Sarcasm Mode?
Ace of Spades: I have the same issue with spelling the House Speaker's name as Seroco, so I'll answer for you. He cannot take the House Speaker's name seriously, as it's spelled Boehner. Neither he nor I can pronounce it as "bay-nurr" while we spell it like boe-nurr.

That failure goes back to the early Cold War though, namely in assuming that A) every anti-colonial/national liberation movement is an ideological threat and B) that said movements can be defeated with force alone. Its nothing new, the First World is really bad at winning the political side of these kinds of conflicts.

The British are better than most, though*. Better than the Americans or the French, at least.

@Rational: forgive me for thinking we could learn something over a hundred fucking years, especially since the Cold War ended a fifth of a century ago.
EDIT: Gah. This has me kinda pissed off. Sorry if I'm acerbic.

That, and the Russians know more than anyone else how the Syrian Military is organised and what the Syrian Military operates. Needless to say, with stuff like the Pantsir S-1
around, it won't be easy...
The Romneys seem to have changed their ways.
What do you think? Genuine repentance or clever image-cleaning?
Mache dich, mein Herze, rein...

Me smash head so dumb words stop coming out.
Is it too much to hope for that the purge will force Boehner and what's left of his allies to form a coalition with the Democrats, like a reverse New York?
