Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well remember Lyndon B. Johnson was a Democrat Texan politician as well.
Texas didn't really start going Republican until the 1970s.
Brooks was one of the Southern Democrats that was able to survive the shift to Republicanism due to his seniority.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Funnily enough, I ran into this in regards to LBJ: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2012/12/lbjs-last-interview.html
But yeah, Serocco, you like to act like anyone you don't like is absolutely pure evil, instead of the things that they probably are. Like in this case, horribly, tragically mistaken. Paranoid is probably the right word to use here, paranoid fuck is not.
It could have been avoided if Charles de Gaulle had just accepted the end of the French Colonial Empire.
House committee purge may continue as Boehner tightens grip

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016It feels like Baehner (I refuse to spell it as it is, for obvious reason) is accumulating more authority as Speaker out of desperation.
With Romney out, Baehner is the head of the Republicans for the next four years, so Baehner's doing the best he can to assume more direct control over the House.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Serocco, dung is flammable, since otherwise those kids wouldn't have been collecting it for warmth, because it wouldn't make for a good fire. I mean this is a horrible, horrible tragedy, but given that they were digging near a road, had a flammable substance, and the Taliban is known for recruiting children, there does seem to be enough reason to have the benefit of the doubt.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyYou refuse to spell his name correctly for what reasons? No, they're not obvious. You're being ridiculous.
Anyway. I can't help but think this is going to backfire on Boehner somehow. I mean, I realize that he's kicking out the more extreme of his party right now, but these kind of things tend to end badly, and the Republican party is kind of flailing right now.
This could very well be the end of the Tea Party movement, or it could be the end of Boehner. Obviously I'm hoping for the latter, but I think the Tea Partiers still have some clout to screw things up before they're gone.
I don't think it's about gaining anything on the Democrat's part. Since, you know, they're the ones trying to reform it. It's about forcing fair play; IE, if you're going to filibuster, you damn well actually have to be doing something for it to count as a filibuster. This is a case of holding themselves up to the same standards they want the Republicans to measure up to.
I have no idea what the Republicans have been doing if they haven't had someone out there speaking as part of the filibuster actions.
Edit: Uh... No, Thorn. Fucking no. Riots in the Congress are terrible things that just produce more waste. We don't need our Congress to devolve even further into inanity. That would not be amusing to anyone but neanderthals.

Seriously, give the man the tiniest benefit of the doubt and you'll see how unreasonable you're being.
