Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

God help me for saying this but....
I'm with the President. We got debts and we need the economy to get big again so people will have jobs. Raise the fucking taxes. Another $15 out of my paycheck won't kill me.
And for God's sake, tax the fucking rich. They absolutely won't miss it. Hell, you've got Warren Buffett begging the government to take his money.
This Democrat/Liberal thing of "Debt? We don't care about no stinkin' debt!" pisses me off, but let's focus on making sure we don't turn into Greece, and then we'll take on the Socialist koolaid later.

It was an honorHoly shit I got ninjaed and inappropriately page topped.
@ Maxima: I don't think it's that Democrats aren't concerned about debt, but that they put it lower on the list of priorities. They put being able to feed people and make sure they don't fall into a financial pit they can't crawl out of above that.
More like they're starting to concede it's an inevitability, Serocco. And a fight they can't win in the eyes of a public sick of wars.

Actually, if we go off the cliff, the defense budget gets cut by $500 billion anyway

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.@Serocco
I think they're getting a bit desperate just to balance things out.
@Maxima
I meant that the Republican argument against raising taxes on rich isn't strong. Even if the economy is slowed a little, wouldn't saving essential features (services, necessary spending, debt treatment) be more important, if it's for the sake of avoiding a crisis they would project?
The republicans have a dangerous choice to make.
Do they A) Hold firm to their beliefs, refusing to ever raising taxes, and then let the automatic...tax raises happen...to everyone. or B) stand firm against Norquist (All Praise Be Upon Him) and raise tax rates for the top 2%?
A) Will let them keep their uh, purity in tact or something B) will not make the country fucking hate them

No. It's a tiny fraction of our spending. We have no great need to cut defense right now. Frankly, we should be breaking out the New Deal again.
But, if we're making cuts, I'd say the military should be first on the chopping block.
Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.This cuts defense by 500 billion? Well then full speed ahead! The only way this could get better is if it actually raised taxes on the rich instead of just removing the current cuts.

Are you joking? It's a third of our budget and it's higher than the next ten counries combined. Even if we slashed it in half we're still twice as large as China in that area.

My point is, yes the military should be cut, but letting us fall off the cliff would cut much much more than military and do way more damage.
Would I love military cuts? Yes. But not thorugh this. Too many other things would be cut.
And I'd bet my ass that the majority of those cuts would go to hurt soldier benefits like healthcare.
Not smart cuts. We'd still probably be paying for overexpensive contractors and developing unneeded jets.

The people who wanted to impeach him clearly had a different opinion on that.
