The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A drawdown isn't the same as withdrawal. - Serocco
An immediate total pullout of US troops in Afghanistan would be disastrous, both for the US and for the Afghani public. US troops are still largely responsible for what law and order there is, despite the number of Afghan police and military forces we've helped to train and equip.

Senate O Ks drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants - Deviant Braeburn
The opposition to this measure truly mystifies me. I mean, even the hardcore anti-immigrant people I would expect to support this, because one of the primary requirements to get a driver license is proof of residence - which would then give them a clear target.

I think we should ratify the treaty, but it really doesn't mean much outside of placing ourselves in a morally superior position. We're already the most handicap-accessible nation.

New York's local Senate is now in a coalition between Republicans and Independent Democrats.

In the same article, it says Brooklyn's Democratic-leaning local Senator-elect Simcha Felder will caucus with Republicans.

That means, at the local level, New York will lean Republican.

the UN is trying to take over our "sovereignty"

Bu... but... but its.. it is... intergovernmental, not supranational. I am confused as to how the United Nations Organisation takes away sovereignty.

Apparently, Hillary is militarizing the State Department.

Specifically, Hillary and the Pentagon created the Global Security Contingency Fund (GSCF), a joint pool of money funded by upwards of $200 million from the Defense Department and $50 million from the State Department to be used for rapid responses to security situations.

The State Department is about ambassadorial negotiations. Not police-esque responses to supposed emergencies.

Why, by invading and taking over the US with a "UN Army", of course!

That's a fairly common Conspiracy Theory related to the UN in the US, Hopey.

Leon Panetta, Secretary of Defense, has warned that cyber warfare “could be as destructive as the terrorist attack of 9/11.”

Way back, the President himself wrote to the Wall Street Journal. “The lack of clean water or functioning hospitals could spark a public health emergency. As we've seen in past blackouts, the loss of electricity can bring businesses, cities, and entire regions to a standstill.”

...

...

What.

The only military force that could take on the US successfully is the European Union (if all 27 states combine) and that'd be a stalemate.

Seriously, we really need to trim our military.

Baehner removed four Republicans from the Financial Services Committee, due to their history of toeing the party line. One of the four, as an example, spoke out against our involvement in Afghanistan. Two voted against Paul Ryan's budget plan, but only because "it didn't cut spending enough".

The US military could literally fight every other military on the planet at once and win.

However, I think the common concern over these UN treaties is the fact that the status of treaties with regards to the Constitution is a little ambiguous. The Supreme Court has held in the past that treaties which contradict the Constitution are null and invalid, but it's apparently not a closed issue and some legal experts disagree.

So in other words, people aren't scared that the UN will take over the US, they are scared that Obama will use the UN to take away their freedoms, which while still unlikely is much more plausible.

Have you seen the US Defense budget?

Yes, I know it is incredibly huge, but nonetheless, the technology and size of the US and (combined) EU armed forces are equal enough to result in a stalemate.

I really don't see a Who Would Win between the U.S. and the rest of the world as a productive conversation. It presumes conditions that cannot realistically exist. Further, there is no way that a war of that nature would not go nuclear at some point, and if that happens we're all in big trouble.

All this saber rattling about how we can defeat the coming U.N. invasion is little more than deliberate fear-mongering. What sets it apart from run of the mill conspiracy theories is that it's being used for political advantage, by stirring up those fears and then using them as a wedge issue.

The United States needs to learn how to play nice with the rest of the world. We are in a global society now, and nationalism is going to become obsolete eventually. That is, unless someone deliberately pushes back the clock by damaging economic and/or foreign policy badly enough that we do get into another war. *cough* Republicans.

The reason why the US military budget is so much greater than the rest of the world combined is because the rest of the world is relying on the US Military to help preserve global stability. The size of the US allows other regions to focus their resources on more productive activities. It's a pretty good deal for all concerned, actually.

So, you know Karl Rove, right? Mister Delusional During Obama Re-Election?

You also know Dick Morris, a pollster that loudly predicted a landslide Romney victory?

Yeah, Roger Ailes authorized Fox News to push Rove Dick Morris to the sidelines until further notice. We won't see their faces on air until the next presidential election.
