The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Everybody wants to be the new Rome. Russians, Ottomans, Napoleon. I think it's the togas, or those domes.

Plus we modeled our government on Rome's.

But if that comparison doesn't work for you, pick another. To be honest, it's probably more likely we'll end up like Britain: increasingly unimportant every decade as the world passes us by.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

A drawdown isn't the same as withdrawal.

@Edwards Grizzly [1]: My bad, it's not in the Constitution proper; it's the 14th Amendment:

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.

In one sense this was made to tell people in the South that they could not refuse Northern money after the Civil War, but it could be construed so as to make it illegal not to honor the debt.

Just noticed that several prominent employers in the area are starting to severely cut their employee's hours, citing the new heath care laws as their reasoning. Ingles Supermarkets and Wal-Mart are probably some of the larger employers in my area, and they've cut a large number of long-time employees down to less than 30 hours per week. Additionally, Amazon's local distribution warehouses [which employ thousands of people from the surrounding towns] are threatening large-scale layoffs after the new year. On the last one I haven't found anything online about, but I've heard it from multiple people working there over the last few days.

Well, its pretty simple. Large Companies are more interested in profits than the fact their workers are miserable.

Warren is gonna head the banking panel? Let's see what she does.

Also, props to the Senate for remembering that Hispanics are a major part of the electorate.

The thing is that if the US leaves the UN, they also leave their position as part of the UN Security Council unoccupied, which means they wouldn't be able to veto what the remaining members of the Security Council decide. One big example would be the US couldn't veto anything concerning Israel and Palestine with their position in the Security Council if they left the UN.

Basically, the US can't leave the UN unless they want to lose all representation in it for the duration.

And it's for that very reason why no one would seriously propose leaving the UN. No one in a position of making that sort of decision, anyway.

Well, we already have the law which the treaty based on and it's more comprehensive.

Still stupid, though.

The fact that you need a supermajority (practically impossible to get these days on all but the most routine motions) to pass treaties is a bit crazy. I guess Alexis de Tocqueville had a point when he said that the whole separation of powers thing was a bad move foreign policy wise.tongue

Course he never saw executive orders coming.evil grin

It makes sense to me. Something important like that should not be decided by one vote.

[up] But not taking action on important matter is also decision.

and it could be be decided by 1/3 + 1 vote.

[up]How? That's pretty much a refusal to make a decision in my mind.

Okay that was badly phrased. I mean that it shouldn't be decided by a tiny majority.

Well, you're lucky that Congress tends to be more bipartisan in foreign policy.

Imagine if the two major parties were divided in terms of interventionism. Nothing would get passed. That's what happened with Woodrow Wilson's attempts.
