Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A singular world government would be incredibly inefficient. The US has problems getting 50 states to work together, imagine how many problems a government would have getting the world to work together.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I agree entirely (see my previous post) but it serves no purpose to claim that people who are worried about them and want a plan to deal with with them are either ignorant or acting in bad faith.
Were it me, I would offer the fiscal conservatives a long term deficit reduction plan in exchange for another stimulus package.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Apparently.
Its just disgusting. I'm disgusted, thats the only word I can use right now.
People actually want us to leave the UN, why? So we can torture in peace? Or use chemical weapons?
We're not even first place in ANYTHING other than military, and we act like our shit not only stinks, but is made of solid gold.

It needed two-thirds of the Senate's approval to get passed.
It only got 61 votes, meaning it fell five votes short.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@Thorn: That's not true. America is the strongest country in the world. It has the biggest economy, biggest military, most aid to foreign countries, and largest cultural output every year. If America wasn't on top, this argument wouldn't exist.
@Deviant: The link won't open for me. What does it say?
@Senate vote: What did the treaty even do? Didn't it just confirm things we already did?
Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.
@Bush: Well, I have to say that I find that slightly surprising and very encouraging to see. Bumps up my respect for our last Pres a tiny bit.
Basically, W was a key speaker at a conference, talking positively about all of the benefits that immigrants bring to the country, and quotes him from 2008 warning the Repubs not to become anti-immigrant.

Maybe they think it may not be the first one, so they'd rather be safe than sorry?
I dont know. Good question.
Religious people are insane.
Its true though, one of the "indications" that the rapture will happen soon is the anti christ sets up a new world order.
People think Obama is this anti-christ.

Every time I hear that, I feel the desire to respond with a link to "Everyone's a little bit racist", just For the Lulz.
Obama is many things, but the Antichrist, no.

In fact Libertarians (of the Ron Paul variety) tend to be more UN fearing than Conservatives, at least based on my experiences.

Oh god, this.
Seriously people there have been a ton of different empires, why does Rome get all the comparisons.
The comparisons are always weak.

My knee-jerk response from the title is, "That's it?" But I was unaware of the money already released for storm damage.

Because none of the other empires got cool softcore porn shows on HBO?

Because people think it would end up with hard working god loving Americans to convert to Muslim, abort their babies, and get gay married.
