There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Besides all Obama has to do after things had gone over the fiscal cliff is just say what he plans to do... Namely that he and the Democrats will push for tax breaks on the middle class because of this setback.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyBob Dole to confront Senate Republicans on U.N. disabilities treaty
Dear god, I think Dole might be a zombie.

I would approve of spending cuts if they weren't to programs we actually fucking need. The biggest waste of money in the US is the military budget but that is the one thing Republicans refuse to compromise on.

I wonder what the State of the Union Address will be like. That's probably going to be the point where he tries to wake the country up to what's going on. He really needs to explain to them what he wants to do for the people and why the Republicans are preventing him from doing it.

I wouldn't call it a waste, but we can and should trim it back some.
another lesson from EU 3- spend all(or most of) your money on the military and you fuck yourself economically.

That's a realistic scenario, but I find myself continually amazed at the Republicans' willingness to stonewall over the debt ceiling given how dearly it cost them in 2011.
I don't know; we have a poor track record lately of productive compromises.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Joesolo: Well I call it waste since most of it is buildup from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Since the wars are over and we don't have any intention of starting others (at least we shouldn't) cutting spending in those areas would be a wise move.
tclittle:...
So exactly what most of us want to happen? Then by all means, let's drive over the damn thing.
Fighteer: That didn't do them in. It was obviously voter fraud and slander of Mitt Romney.
Trivialis: Money? Granted the Democrats want that too so there's more to it then that. My take on it is that many of them sincerely want what's best for the nation, they just don't realize what that is due to an entire media machine that lies nonstop. Now there are those that are just greedy assholes but I still have a hard time believing most of them are doing this out of malice.

According to the article I posted, the GOP's plan is to vote for Extending the tax cuts for middle class and not a damn thing else. No tax loopholes closed, nothing about unemployment benefits, nothing else. Then leave for Christmas and let the new Congress deal with it.
Also, they plan on having the GOP come and just say they were present at the voting, and let the Democrats vote it in.
I'm also wondering who's gonna be the asshole on either side of Congress, and decide to screw it all up.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I'm still believing that the Democrats will cave over this fiscal cliff issue and offer the Grand Bargain to the Republicans.
It's what the CE Os want, after all. They realize how great the Grand Bargain is for them, and since they're the leaders of the Republicans, eventually, they'll cave to their leaders' wishes.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.U.N. disabilities treaty faces GOP opposition
You're being unnecessarily negative here. I, for one, think the Democrats are sick and tired of the GOP's shit, the majority of people support tax increases on the rich which means there will be backlash against Dems that back out on that promise (We do vote them in, after all), and Obama has nothing to lose by meeting their bluff.
Which it seems like he's already doing, in fact. The GOP is backing themselves into a corner here.
Seriously, this negativity of yours makes me sick sometimes.

The problem is independents but given how they chose Obama I have a feeling they're starting to catch on too. All he has to do is avert a recession and continue on our current path and the Republicans will be in the position to lose a ton of seats.
