Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You know what? Fuck this. Let's drive right the fuck over that cliff. Let's let the Republicans see that this time, for once, we're not going to be pushed around. We're not playing. This isn't a game. They can either play ball, or get off the field.
I'm not going to let their rampant greed ruin my country any longer.
Obama to take fiscal cliff questions on Twitter

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016![]()
Unfortunately the cost of that is millions of jobs in America and around the world, further global instability and who knows what else.
And I think you are seriously underestimating the GOP media machine guys.
...Yeah. You think we would have learned that GIFT is a reality from all those petitions.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Ugh. True.
I just wish that there was a way to do something about all of this. We need to fix the root of the problem, but it seems like no one is willing to do that.
What do you guys think it would take to seriously knock the GOP and the basic Conservative Right off of their pedestal?

However bad any single recession can be (and it can be incredibly bad, I know), it's still an individual event. This obstructionism game we've had going on in congress will continue to be played indefinitely, and cause human suffering indefinitely, until we can find a way to make the obstructionists lose. They can't wuss out and keep punting the ball ahead a year every single time.
Now, if the general public chooses to believe whatever the Republican party says no matter how much it fails to match up with reality, then of course we're in a no-win situation, but if that's the case, we're screwed regardless of the fiscal cliff anyway.
And I'm with Tomu, I don't think the general public is going to swallow putting all the blame on the Democrats. Americans are shallow and extremely susceptible to emotional kneejerking, but they're not outright RETARDED.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.![]()
Losing the 2016 Presidential election?
Losing 3 elections in a row would be hell for any party.
I mean look at what happened to the Dems after there losses in 1980, 1984, and 1988. By 1992 they were desperate for a victory, even if it meant accepting Clinton's centrism.

Sometimes the difference between victory and defeat is simply saying The line must be drawn here. This far, NO FURTHER.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I'm sceptical as to how big a recession will be triggered by this, if at all. I think both sides are deliberately pushing the panic button in order to get the changes they want and to be able to point at the other side as the bad guys. I also think that, at least to a degree the Democrats don't want the Republicans to give in on taxes and the Republicans don't want the Democrats to give in on spending because they would have that much less to hit each other over the head with. It's all theater folks and about as real as professional wrestling.

Trump delenda estNah it's a Xanatos Gambit on both sides,if either gives in and things don't change, they can blame the other side for not being a complete doormat.
If neither does, the other gets painted as evil for be uncompromising
And for the rest of us Failure Is the Only Option
Our beloved President has finished his Q&A on Twitter.
Yeah, the Democrats are going to lose on this one. Obama's overreaching. When the economy crashes, it'll be the Democrats who take the blame. It's still the Republicans' fault, so soon after another Democratic victory? It looks like finger-pointing. Obama should have taken their compromise. That was the best offer America's going to get.
Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.White House spurns Republican offer on 'fiscal cliff' negotiations

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Republicans are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They see it as their mission not to compromise on tax increases for the rich, but if the sequester goes through, taxes are going to go up. All Obama has to do is hold firm — either way he gets tax increases on the rich. It's a beautiful trap.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"His approval ratings among whom? Democrats will blame Republicans and Republicans will blame Democrats. This won't change the political demographics one bit.

Eh, I don't think Republicans can spin it like that. They can spin it like that to their bubble, but I think the rest of the country has stopped listening.
