Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Cutting public sector spending is the last thing the economy needs right now. What we need is to keep things like welfare especially going. Welfare is one of the best government programs for getting money back into the economy. People on welfare don't horde their money in banks. They don't have enough of it to really horde. They go out and spend it. That's what drives the economy. People spending money. It lets the rich get richer, and the poor get richer.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickHoard = a collection of things. Horde = a collection of people. Argh.

If I had to guess, lighting our oil reserves on fire for the lolz is probably more popular than going off the cliff.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Guys, the proposed situation is that if we go past the fiscal cliff, the Republicans will be in an even worse bargaining position than they are in now. Meaning they will have less leverage to get the cuts they want and won't name. This whole "it's going to be a worse bargain" is a good bit of that alarmism that I keep warning us against.
Frankly, with some Democrats advocating for meeting the cliff I'd say that at least some of them are willing to play hardball to get what they want. After this the Republicans will essentially be voting for raising taxes on their middle class constituents that voted them in. And politicians tend to like keeping their jobs.
It's not going to trigger a recession immediately like an on-off switch.
But even if it DID, and said recession caused immense human suffering... I would consider it superior in the long term to having to repeat this kind of political chicken with the Republicans every year or so.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Of course if the Republicans manage to spin this as the result of Democratic unwillingness to negotiate it could completely reverse their fortunes. And then we get a recession and a GOP White House/Congressional majority in 2016 that screws you guys over badly.

Most of them seem to think they got voted in the on the "no new taxes" and have to hold to that, regardless of whether that's currently wise or not.
