The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] Gingrich, for once, is correct.

I'm fully expecting Obama to give the Republicans largely what they want by the end of the year. Probably during Christmas, where nobody will notice.

Yes, Gingrich, the Fiscal Cliff was an invention by Washington, but you're still wrong. Obama did not invent it, nor did his party. Your party did. Your people did. Get off of your high horse and admit you done goofed. You and your party have created a monster, and, when it starts going after your party, your now disowning it, rather than fessing up to what your party did wrong.

"Last week The Onion said I was going to become a male stripper." — Education Secretary Arne Duncan responding to questions about his future.

Pffft.

...Reading the article, that was the person responding to an article recommending her as Secretary of State, with her saying that the Onion is more accurate than the person who recommended her, and it was saying that she would become a male stripper.

No one wants to go over the fiscal cliff. The question is whether they're willing to go over it to get something else they want. The Democrats want higher taxes for the rich and would prefer not to cut social programs. The Republicans want less spending and no tax increases for anyone.

If the Republicans agree to higher taxes for the rich, Democrats will likely agree to some decreased spending. This is the same debate that happened during the last manufactured crisis, the debt ceiling debate. Democrats and Republicans both have things they want. Democrats are willing to compromise on some of their positions, Republicans are not. Bad things happen, and Republicans blame Democrats for not agreeing to their proposal.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

The fiscal cliff will also cost millions of people their jobs and send the world back into a second recession. And Obama will likely take the heat for it; ensuring that the GOP retakes the White House in 2016 and encouraging these kinds of tactics in the future.

Eh, I think that the president has the stronger hand here. Yes, the Austerity Bomb will suck-but a lot of it is things that won't go into effect immediately, and once the Republicans finally lose their oh-so-precious Bush tax cuts, they're now in a position where they need something from the democrats.

It isn't wrong of the president to be pushy. He just won an election, and this isn't like he's trying to privatize social security (like GW Bush tried) or something radical. He just wants higher top marginal rates.

Don't most Americans favor higher taxes on the rich? Regardless of how small Obama's victory margin was that should send a message.

[up]Not only did he win the election, he won an election that he honestly should have lost. Had I not been following this thread and seeing how the predictions of the outcome went I would have been surprised by the result.

Well, it does turn out that Romney's campaign was fudging their own internal numbers, and that's why Romney had everything planned for a victory and nothing for a defeat.

This is absurd. The outcome for the election was exactly the same as the June predictions (maybe it was slightly closer but that's it). You're going to tell me that nobody in his staff considered that they might be doing something wrong? I mean the fact that pretty much everybody disagreed with them is a pretty glaring thing to ignore.

[up]Well it's not a supermajority but the fact that a third of Republicans support it is good news.

Remind the libertarian wing of the Tea Party about this betrayal and watch the TPers get ousted in 2014, perhaps?

See, this is what pisses me off about the American Green Party. They should be hammering away at the congressional level with this stuff. Run a bunch of of small-c conservative/rural progressive types for the House; they'll do much better than a Presidential candidate who'd get blocked at every turn if she won.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

This...literally makes me sick to my stomach. These..."people" lost the election, and still, they pretend like they have a mandate, hopping along on their corporate puppetmasters strings. When will they accept that they lost?
