The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This article points out that despite the rampant hatred of big government in America, people still think the president can do whatever he wants.

Someone introduce unions to the idea of worker's cooperatives. There are a ton of industries that could rock the corporate competition by offering lower prices and not paying executives ridiculous salaries. MONDRAGON would rock house in the States.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

@ deathpigeon:

UAVs are the "in" thing at the moment. Everyone's making them or buying them — for example, the Israelis are doing quite well in selling UAVs, amongst other nations. Us British are operating the American MQ-9 Reaper (RAF) and a British version of an Israeli design (Army), along with a tactical version about the size of a toy aeroplane. BAE also have a stealth recce drone in development, similar to the RQ-170.

Mind you, the idea has been around since World War I, and UAVs were used in action during The Vietnam War. The Chinese copied them. smile

All this striking seems to be an indication that unions are going to gain more popularity. They maybe not be called unions in the future, but it seems to be becoming more of a thing lately.

@Tricksterston: What?

Costco's a good company. The CEO pays his employees well and works with the union.

@Presidential magic powers: AHAHAHAHAAHAH. YES. Secession petitions from all fifty states. Anyone mocking the South and Texas can go suck it. But yeah, this is the sort of thing that happens when you open yourself up to the internet and let people know what's being asked by everyone.

In fairness, Texas' petition has the most signers (118,000). The runner-up state is Louisiana with 37,000 signers.

The largest petition for a non-Southern state (I'm counting Florida as Southern by the way) is Colorado's petition which has 24,000 signers.

The petitions are also meaningless, because the answer is, "No."

In fairness, Deviant, people pile on Texas and the South in general as backwards barbaric places when the things you can say about them happen all over the fucking country. And I am tired of having to hear that shit.

It's a question of density.

For instance, Texas has the largest population of the southern states (aside from Alaska which obviously isn't actually a southern state even if it politically aligns with the south), so you can't just go by raw number count, you have to go by percentage of the population count.

You also have to note that a some of those signatures on those petitions are either trolls or people from outside the state, which inflates the number of people who legitimately signed it.

Wait, how does Alaska align with Texas politically? I thought that Alaska was all for socialism since it's a hellhole.

Or something.

I'm pretty sure that actual Alaskans would object to their home being called a hellhole.

And no, the widespread frontier lifestyle lends itself well to traditionally conservative politics. Which is why they're largely Republican voters, which is how they're aligned with the south. They have some peculiarities in regards to the natives (Native American tribes, I mean) and some deal where they all apparently get money for oil somehow, but other than that they're pretty normally Republican.

I dont mean to insult Alaskans, but all I see/hear from Alaska does not give it a good image.

Shows how much a canadian can guess the orientation of a state.

For added confusion, Alaska tends to be one of Those Two Guys with Hawaii, a dyed True Blue Democratic state, due to the fact that they both have outsider status because they're not part of the contiguous forty eight of the mainland.

Alaska is not that far tho. I mean, just one Canada corner away.

Tho the lack of roads doesn't help.

Alaska is the only state where you actually need a passport in order to get to it when driving. If you've managed to drive to Hawaii, you need to market whatever the fuck it is you did and make millions of dollars.
