Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Who don't agree with each other — Do you think the Elites totally agree with each other in all areas?
Knowing Humanity, that's rather unlikely. You'll get a Not-So-Omniscient Council of Bickering At Best.

Precisely. They don't agree with each other. That's precisely how they act as checks on each other. If everyone agreed, they wouldn't check each other, they'd amplify themselves.
Also, no, I don't think the "elite" are unified. I think that there is inherent selfishness to them because they have to be selfish to become the elite. You don't make millions by giving your money to the poor. Because they are selfish, they work toward bettering themselves at the cost of those below them, and equal to them, and above them. They will screw everyone over just to turn their millions into tens of millions. That's not right.
I've got time for one more question: Do you think Humanity is inherently selfish*?
That's the Trouble. Whatever "Human Nature" actually is, it's a Brick Wall OTC keeps running headlong into. Humanity Is Flawed, in the end!!!!!!
Keep Rolling OnNo. At least, not entirely. There's an inherent element of altruism to human nature. There's also an element of working as a group and, in a sense, teamwork to human nature. However, yes, there is an element of selfishness to human nature, it's just balanced by other elements. However, to become a part of the elite, the element of selfishness has to be much more dominant since selfishness helps one succeed within society, though not necessarily helping society succeed as a whole.
Krugman continues to examine the relationship between debt and economic performance in countries with sovereign currencies and finds no evidence that the gold standard and/or primary surpluses improves recession outcomes over devaluation and debt issuance. Britain versus France in the 20's
.
I still can't believe people seriously want to return to the gold standard. I just can't find the words.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Reagan and Bill Buckley were both prone to holding attitudes contrary to their images as conservative icons. Buckley for instance was a proponent of legalizing marijuana. Then there was Barry Godwater's statement on letting gays into the military: "What matters is if a soldier can shoot straihgt, not if he is straight.
Trump delenda estIt's not that surprising, really. There's a lot of conspiracies people have about the Federal Reserve that make some people want to switch away from fiat currency - mainly thanks to Ron Paul.
And from what I know, Reagan was personally opposed to homosexuality, but didn't think the government should be intrusive with anti-gay legislation. It's actually very consistent with conservatism and its small government ethos.
"Where free unions and collective bargaining is forbidden, freedom is lost." - Ronald Reagan
Many of the supposed icons of the right and left held views that would surprise their empty-headed modern cheerleaders.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiYou lying bastard Ronnie, why did you go after unions and leftist governments in Latin America during your term then? Nicaragua ring any bells?
I wept at the death of one great American in 2004: Ray Charles.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. You have to remember Reagan was a Democrat at one point and he switched his views on unions
Was that quote from before the 60's or during the presidency?

...and People are People are People, and don't stop becoming People, whatever they actually do...
