Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I have always had a sneaking regard for a man who has managed to rise to a position of such power and influence despite carrying the ineffably ridiculous name of "Grover Norquist".
That said, I really hope that Saxby et al tell him to get stuffed.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiLindsey Graham, Peter King break with Grover Norquist
I really would love to hear an explanation of how Norquist hoped to do anything with his silly paper.
Did he honestly think that American politicians would not drop a toothless little waiver the second it suited them? They don't follow actual law so well at times.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@Grizzly: he does have a point in that being so outright extremist about abortion and never ever compromising makes the republican party downright toxic to women. Which means theres a nonzero chance if they keep harping on it that your vote wont matter anyways because repiblicans will slide firther into obscurity and powerlessness.
and really. Its not the business of males anyhow, imo.

Except that it has to be the business of every male politician since they have to represent the will of their entire district, not just the ones of the same gender.
"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."Can't the conservative politicians just leave abortion alone? Can we stop dredging up decades old issues and actually focus on fixing the damn country! There are ways to get abortion rates down without criminalizing it but they have also blocked these at every turn so I'm sorry if I have little sympathy for them. We don't need this right now and it appalls me that a group that's supposedly "pro-life" can be so against every attempt to improve the quality of life of its constituency.

A lot of their committees on women's health tend not to involve women at all. Or at least not women who don't agree with them one hundred percent. And then there's the debacle with Sandra Fluke that shows what they'll do to any woman brave enough to stand up and speak. Insult her egregiously and deliberately misunderstand her. (Such as the fact that women keep taking birth control pills regardless of whether or not they're having sex. Because taking them just before having sex is not how those pills work.)
So yeah. They have, largely, come off as incredibly patronizing this year. There is a reason the GOP needs to back off of the abortion talk.
And, of course, dropping the talk of certain social issues would help to alleviate the Republican's current image of persistent foot-in-mouth. Or, at least, the perception of it.
I just still don't understand how the basic conservative moor of "small government" and the Republican pro-life platform isn't the crux of every debate on the subject.

"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."Well, yes, I have in fact understood that. That wasn't my question. My question is why more major sources don't bring that hypocrisy up.

"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."Grizzly: Out of curiosity, if the Republican party (or every Republican in an area where you can vote) stopped trying to push pro-life legislation, how would you vote?

Because the media is not this big bad liberal monstrosity like they seem to think it is. I also have a feeling the higher ups tell them to ignore these things since they're probably Republican.

I posted an article about Saxby announcing that he was braking his pledge a while back.
