Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That was interesting. It seems to be part of the ongoing discussion regarding whether it's the genes or the environment that controls obesity. It seems obvious that someone can have a body type naturally suited to being heavy, or scrawny like myself.
But just because someone may have to work slightly harder than someone else doesn't mean they shouldn't still work at it.
It was an honor@Max: It's mostly because people who are overweight are more likely to injure themselves in the course of exercise. Most gyms really aren't equipped to provide the sort of low-impact routine that we need to safely exercise. It's a sad irony that stationary bicycles aren't designed for the obese.
"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -DrunkscriblerianWell DG, that's where "we" do our part. In loudly denouncing Emperor Bloomberg's soda ban, I said I'd like to see more meaningful things like realistic physical ed taught in schools and for there to be greater access to exercise facilities.
Not necessarily gyms. I mean, more green space, more public pools, gyms with fewer bench presses and more stationary bikes made for heavier people, etc.
And now you see why I could never be a card-carrying liberal.

It was an honor
Hey, I'm pretty sure that most card-carrying liberals think that PETA is nuts. Heck, even some of the radicalveganbuddisthippies around here think that PETA is full of it.
Also, that article did mention that the soda bans might be more effective than more education on the matter.
"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -DrunkscriblerianIt's 4.5 billion, actually. A billion is 1 000 million, so it's not a small difference.
The evidence for the age of the Earth is more precise and probably more conclusive than that used by doctors when they recommend that you quit smoking, don't drink too much, avoid junk food and do sports. But both of these are very well supported scientific claims, so your comparison is correct.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.“You understand so well that African-Americans, women, and members of the LGBT community have been poorly served throughout history,” Newkirk writes, “and now I am asking you to consider other living beings who are ridiculed, belittled, and treated as if their sentience, feelings, and very natures count for nothing.”
TURKEYS ARE NOT SENTIENT! On top of that they aren't people. That is not prejudice. It's simple biology.
Sorry but that bit really set me off. Maxima I don't think anyone in this thread supports PETA. Actually I'm pretty sure most liberals in general think they're insane and give animal rights activists a bad name. They're kind of like the WBC in that regard.

Depends on your definition of sentience
@Max: Actually, that's the whole line of logic behind abstinence-only sex ed.
And it's not like there's a huge sex lobby dedicated to pushing sex on small children. And it's not like there was a huge uproar about how a sex-manufacturer went under and "our kids will never know the joy of eating a sex".
They couldn't care/find homes for them. I'm guessing that they would've had more luck with that if they didn't blow their money on extravagant ad campaigns.
And turkeys are sentient - hell, even plants show signs of sentience
- they just aren't sapient (capable of reasoning). Mixing the two words up is a pretty common mistake.

PETA is a thoroughly despicable organization, with their chief and only concern being the well being of animals (which is obviously nonsense, given they euthanize 95% of the animals in their care). They trample on gay rights, they use the objectification of women to further their ad campaigns (which is what they spend most of their money on), they're tied to domestic terrorist groups (Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front), their spokespeople are utter hypocrites (wearing fur clothing and using leather clothing and upholstry), and their founder is bat-fucking-shit-insane, who is morally opposed to giving birth.

But I have found info that PETA is opposed to no-kill shelters.
