Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm baaaaaaackThe very idea of forcing God's agenda forward seems arrogant in the extreme. You'd expect this from works of fiction, not real live people.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Seems like some folks are rooting for it to happen as soon as possible. I guess they find the world too sinful to continue to exist, or maybe they want to take the fast track to heaven via the Rapture. Who knows?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"In any event, your mostly going to find that kind of attitude among the more traditional Southern Baptists and certain subgroups of evangelicals, both of which Murdoch most certainly is not.
Much more common, in my experience, is "the world is damning itself deeper and deeper every day. The sooner we end it, the fewer rot in hell".
Personally I'd be more inclined to think "there's so many unsaved people: we can't let it end while there's still hope for them" but the other side does have a certain pessimistic logic to it.

<><Well, there is an unstated corollary that the person making the assertion is going to heaven. It gets a bit self-righteous even with the best of intentions.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Obama is the least effective antichrist ever. Plus he doesn't even have 7 heads.

Unlike the Onion, Cracked has pretences of giving information and subverting commonly held misconceptions; they even "source" their claims. That is reason enough to expect some rigour. A "Just Joking" Justification won't cut it.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Because they do things differently, they should be held to different standards. Implying that, because they both attempt to be funny, they should not be held responsible for their words, is fallacious, at best.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I like cracked, because I don't take it seriously and enjoy their humor.
I'm not looking for my news there, I'm looking for funny shit. If I want news, I'll read the news.
The Onion tends to perform its humor by performing so identically with real world news that it's almost believable sometimes. Cracked doesn't have that pretense, it's just funny lists and videos people make, and they come from a very large pool of contributors, which means that much like running a gauntlet of stand-up comedians, some of them will suck.
If you want to talk about false pretenses, the Onion is much more guilty. I remember many years ago when I saw them put up a page that was absolutely identical to the CNN website, in every way, that was airing an article about the dead getting up and attacking people. I was amazed at how legit it looked and going "Zombies, really?" until I looked at the URL and saw it was from the onions website. Cracked isn't really satire, but a different form of humor. The Onion is very effective and realistic satire.

To give you a counterexample, people are said rely on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report for news more than they do on official, "serious" news, and they trust them more, too. This is because, besides being humorous (which isn't very difficult with news; just point out incongruities), their stories are often factual, and they don't hold back on analysing them and pointing out the emperor's clothes.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Frigging nutters.
