The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Are you talking about government or corporations, Green? tongue

Tbh, corporate responsibly is a nice thing, but I'd rather they pay their fucking taxes first. In no universe is Starbucks's British loss, a loss.

I ask three things.

1. Don't treat your workers like shit and provide them with a living wage and decent benefits.

2. Pay your damn taxes and stop trying to look for loopholes.

3. Respect regulations, environmental or otherwise.

Beyond that I don't give a damn what you do so long as you respect those three things. Now I would like it if the government didn't have to force them to do these things but after almost 100 years it's become painfully apparent that they won't do this without being dragged kicking and screaming.

Indeed. America is founded upon classical liberal ideals, and one of those is that government should intervene if necessary for society. But of course, reactionists don't like listening to logic, even if it is constitutional theory.

If companies are people, then is the stock market slave trading?

But yeah, while at their core companies are people (or rather, they are owned by people), it's bad when they can be used as shields to dodge responsibility for their actions.

We need to destroy this horrible institution of the stock market.

Buying a company, then intentionally running it into the ground to take all it's resources and put them into your own pockets: 1st degree murder.

Too bad any sane American will automatically reject the House nomination and (rightfully) assume the GOP are just a bunch of radicals that are illegally seizing the government. Come on, do they really think people are just going to turn a blind eye to this?

How can you force the Electoral College not to cast its vote? Or not cast the Electoral College's vote? Or some shit. I didn't understand much of that, probably because I'm ignorant.

I think in some states it's illegal for the EC vote not to match up with the popular vote, but I'm not sure.

Robotnik: The idea seems to be that a certain portion of the electoral college has to be present before the vote can be legitimate. I believe this is called a quorum. The GOP could just tell the electors of their state to not show up which means the college can't vote legitimately. It then goes to the house who will pick Romney. Or maybe not, they could technically choose anyone.

The obvious flaw in this plan is that it will be really fucking obvious what they did and no intelligent American will accept this illegitimate regime. Before anybody says anything yes I know this is technically legal but it is not something a first world country should be doing.

I believe the Supreme Court could then order the absentee electors to pony up.

It would be funny to see them try in 2016, fall just a little short, and give a landslide victory to the Democratic president when the 10 reddest states don't turn in their electoral votes.

Balmung: I think they could make some people consider it. Unfortunately they'd turn everyone else, probably even a fair amount of Romney supporters, against them since they're essentially setting up a puppet dictatorship in response to the election not going their way.

edit: If they do somehow succeed in installing Romney or someone in the chair in this manner I hope the UN treats this government as illegitimate and reacts accordingly.

Let's see. Stocks represent ownership in a firm, but specifically that means:

1.) The right to vote on the affairs of the company.

2.) The right to dividends.

3.) The ability to seize all assets of the firm after it's paid off any creditors and gone through bankruptcy.

So... hmmmm... what's an analog for that? Eh, analogies are overrated.
