Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Lobbyists do indeed write a lot of unfortunate legislation, but that's only half of the picture: for every issue there are also lobbyists on your side. Ban lobbyists, and special interests will still run the government, except only one side of each issue will have a voice: whichever one gets its foot in the door first.
<><Chop up the entire region into small islands that you then scatter around the world's oceans, isolated from each other.
Barring that, make oil obsolete and get the hell out.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Achieve peace? Well I'd say they need to be modernized. In their current state they're a bit too insulated and are in a hotly contested region on top of that. Giving them things like the internet and college educations along with better access to the outside world would probably help them learn how to get along with their neighbors more.
Well, bombing them only makes us the bad guys. Also, I'm surprised at you for this. Seriously, what the fuck? It's bad enough when you go extremely unrealistically to the left, but "bombing them" is such a moronic non answer that I'm sick of hearing.
And yes, they can stop being fundamentalist. It's going to take time, and a lot of work. Doing things like providing help with infrastructure and education will help with that. But giving into bigoted statements like the ones you've just stated helps absolutely nothing, Serocco.
Our ancestors kicked out the natives and attempted to remove their cultural identity.
We sent two bombs to Japan, massacring hundreds of thousands. We refused to take refugees that wanted sanctuary from the Nazi onslaught. We interned Japanese Americans purely for their heritage.
We were never really "good guys" to begin with.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. And some who will gladly come out and say it
luckily were sane enough that few if any of them get elected to anything.
Alternative was a bloody invasion that likely would have Leveled the entire country and left tens of millions dead. Plus the actual invasion called for more nukes anyway.

I'm baaaaaaackYou are really fucking oversimplifying history. I don't think anybody is saying the US has been a paragon of the world but saying we've never done good things is overly cynical even if we didn't always do them for the right reasons. Also there were other factors involved in the bombing of Japan but I'm not going into that.

As awful as the bombing were, the nukes serve a purpose - to intimidate other nations, including nuclear powers themselves. Nobody is stupid enough to cause a nuclear holocaust. Some will use nukes eventually, but you won't find any sovereign nation doing so. The memory of Nagasaki and Hiroshima is still fresh in their minds.
On the other hand, we evidently are stupid enough to hammer the idea that Iran is building a nuke, or in the process of building a nuke, even though they're not. Attacking Iran in any way would force Russia and China to get involved, triggering what many would feel to be a third world war.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.I don't even know what you're talking about anymore. Also, this seems to be straying afar from the topic.
Also, you just fucking suggested we do exactly that. Bomb the shit out of some place in the middle east, and let whatever happens happen. Make up your damn mind. Also, take a break until you can make some damn sense.

Romney's a pampered plutocrat who's pissed that he couldn't get what he wanted this time around. It's as simple as that.
