The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] The stats don't tell you everything. My little soliloquy laid out how the reason he was elected to a third term was, at least in part, because of his handling of America's involvement in the second world war.

What you give is conjecture in regards to him winning reelection.

Third Term.

Whether Dewey (assuming Dewey gets the Republican nomination like he did in real life) could have beaten Roosevelt in 1944 without America entering WW 2 is a tough call to make.

On one hand people were beginning to discuss Roosevelt's age and health. On the other hand Dewey ran a poor campaign (although this was largely due to his inability to criticize Roosevelt's handling of the war without appearing unpatriotic).

I think Roosevelt could have squeaked out a small victory over Dewey (after all Dewey managed to lose to Truman even with Strom Thurmond unintentionally helping him).

Oh, I remember Truman was widely disliked for his firing of MacArthur.

MacArthur used the media and his apparent charisma to gain such good publicity that people seemed to not know how he unilaterally pardoned Emperor Hirohito of his war crimes.

[up] That was after the election of 1948.

But yeah, Douglas Mac Auther was though of as a war hero. People were pissed when Truman fired him.

I wonder how long it took for people to realize how "hero" is the last word to think of when talking about MacArthur.

Some still do, no doubt.

And it looks like there's a ban on threads directly about Israel, so tread carefully.

[up][up] Yea, they NEVER stay civil and generally attract a lock quickly. I almost wish we'd just have one where anyone who started getting too un-civil just got blocked from that one thread sothe rest of us could try to talk about it.

Not this again.

Can we please stop talking about Israel? I might not like them either but for the foreseeable future withdrawing support will be political suicide so it's pointless to complain about how we need to crack down on them.

[up]This is becoming less and less true. People are growing sick of them, sensitivities are changing, old accusations ring hollow.

Speaking of lobbying, it's not just the Israelis that lobby intensively in the USA. How about we talk about those other nations and their influence?

It is becoming less and less true but that doesn't mean it won't prompt tremendous backlash. All I'm saying is wait.

Yes, but as long as we have stuff we want to sell to you, or have something we'd like to say, we'll lobby...

Lobbying should be banned, as far as I'm concerned. It's been polluted far too much for us to keep.

Lobbying serves a useful purpose. It allows people to inform the government of their concerns — the problem is when they get too much power and not enough accountability. That's certainly an issue at present, but I don't know enough about it to really offer any intelligent commentary on solutions that don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

It's entrenched into the Constitution of the US. Making petitions impersonal would help, though.

I think the basic idea behind lobbyists (having experts in a field advise you on it) is sound. The problem is that these experts often have a major stake in some important company that's a part of this field. I think choosing individuals that are knowledgeable but unbiased would work better.

How? It's hard to be knowledgeable if you'll only be told about stuff if you can be trusted with the stuff because you have stakes in the stuff.

Even so. Once you start learning about something, you become biased, because there is one side that you will regard as truth.
