Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You see how all the Republicans in Congress are beholden to no new taxes, even if it would be a really really good idea? It's 'cuz of him.
2. That I don't know. Not enough action probably, state rights, and OMG VOTER FRAUD likely factor into it.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Although feeling pessimistic about the scam both parties might attempt to pull at the end of the year, there are a few good signs, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
At least 19 Senate Democrats pledges to block any and all attempts to change/cut Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare.
Also, the AARP is running ads warning people to tell Congress not to do a "last minute deal" that cuts Medicare.
You need a huge body of screaming looneys to get any kind of change, so the mellow decisions don't get made.
Fight smart, not fair.@why sensible things don't pass:
Competing interests within the political party. In a two-party system, single-issue parties do not exist, so a party is a conglomeration of several different interest groups. The Democratic party, for example, consists of blacks, hispanics, college students, single-women, pro-choice, health care reformists, union-members, criminal defense lawyers, and LGBT. That's the core of the party. The Republicans have pro-gun owners, pro-life, business owners, the religious, Cubans, and those who make more than $75,000 a year.
Each of those interest groups are focused on their own issues. Unless the issues specifically pertain to those groups, legislation will not be put forth unless it's necessary for the running of government.
November 6th = American Elections.
November 14th = Ahmed Jabari, Palestinian Defense Minister is killed.
November 15th - Rockets target Tel Aviv.
November 16th - Israel Calls Up Reservists.
January 22nd = Israeli General Election.
You know the sure-fire way to win re-election? War. Franklin Roosevelt, George W Bush and Margaret Thatcher can attest to that.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.I'm pretty sure WWII had nothing to do with an election.
And the Palestinians started to bomb Israel first. But let's not get into this.
Israel vs. Palestine discussions never end well. Let's just agree that the other person is horribly wrong and there's nothing we can do to change that.

Roosevelt lost a lot of people when he tried to stack the Supreme Court with judges that supported the New Deal. Under normal circumstances, the man would've lost re-election.
Hell, running for a third term prompted his own Vice President into running against him.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. You have no idea about that.
Plus, he was already well into his, what, second or third term when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor? It was well established then that if he could live forever, he'd be president forever.
Bush won because of 9/11. Not Iraq. Iraq was deeply unpopular and was the reason why that election was as close as it was.

really hoping someone in Washington will put their foot down to Israel, not that it'd ever happen, but it sure would be nice if we stopped ignoring the bullshit they're pulling just because they have a Dark and Troubled Past and they're only doing the exact same thing we did when we got here.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Roosevelt's second term: Faced opposition from the Supreme Court over the New Deal. Lost support from within his own party over court packing scheme. Pro-New Deal Democrats lost six Senate seats and 71 House seats during the midterm elections. Senator Robert Taft formed a coalition between southern Democrats and Republicans to block further New Deal policies. The minimum wage law of 1938 was the last substantial New Deal reform act passed by Congress.
One year after, World War II broke out. The fall of Paris shocked American opinion, and isolationist sentiment declined. A consensus was clear that military spending had to be dramatically expanded. Both parties gave support to his plans for a rapid build-up the American military. Roosevelt ran for office again, spurning Democratic candidates who wanted the White House for themselves, and agitating those who felt he was too imperialist in his campaign for another term.

I think the most sensible reform we could make to gun buying would to require everyone to take a gun safety course before buying one.
