Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Bah. I disagree with the author on what the economy really needs, and on pandering to whites. It's true there's a few of moochers in the USA who are doing a lot of harm, but they ain't the 67%.

He's not banning Obamacare (I don't even think a Governor can do that), he's ceding control to the federal government to set it up, as many other Republican governors have also done.
By not setting up its own exchange, Wisconsin will lose control over several key decisions over how easily consumers will be able to compare insurance plans, what plans can be sold through the exchange, what the plans must cover and their cost.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016"But doesn't the Constitution have a safety clause or something where national legislation overrides that of the states?"
The Supremacy Clause states that if there's a federal law and a state law and they conflict, the federal law is supreme. State requirements can add to federal ones if there's non-conflicting room for it or if the federal law allows.
But there's a catch. Congress can't make nationwide laws on just any random subject matter. If it's not part of the enumerated powers (powers where constitution actually gave Congress permission), then the state law is supreme, and federal law has no power whatsoever. Any law that tries to do it is subject to being struck down.
That was the subject of the court ruling; it was trying to determine if there was a power permitting the passage of the nationwide law. The court ruled that the taxing power counts as the permission. But apparently the law says that states have an alternative option to implement their own healthcare.
The court ruling expanded upon that, saying that Congress can't take away existing Medicaid funding. But I'm a bit unclear on this point because I thought that this only applied to Medicaid expansion and not the entire healthcare plan. It looks like some states are just planning to ignore the plan altogether without a replacement.
Any law that basically says you get arrested for obeying another law is oxymoronic and also unpassable/unenforceable. And this new effort is going to come to nothing.
You also can't declare something illegal once it's been declared legal by the Supreme Court.

Grover Norquist is the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform a group whose goal is "a system in which taxes are simpler, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today."
Americans for Tax Reform is the group that created the ""Taxpayer Protection Pledge", in which the pledger promises to "oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rate for individuals and business; and to oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates." In the 113th Congress over 200 House Representatives and 39 Senators have signed the pledge.
He also is a Board member of the National Rifle Association and the American Conservative Union.
