The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hostess appears to have been killed by the same vulture capitalists that a certain Mr. Romney was so well acquainted with during his business career.

Bah. I disagree with the author on what the economy really needs, and on pandering to whites. It's true there's a few of moochers in the USA who are doing a lot of harm, but they ain't the 67%.

I'm more worried about the supermajority in California doing exactly that, getting cocky and losing it.

The majority completely, the state is just recovering from the disaster that was Schwarzenegggar, and if the Dems screw-up in any way,the GOP takes over and puts us back into disaster.

And with people like Meg Whitman running around in that party,...I don't want to think about what will happen.

Gov. Scott Walker says Wisconsin won't set up Obamacare

And there are politicians who think he didn't go far enough.

Now, they've declared that they want to arrest anyone who implements Obamacare—and that includes the governor himself.

... Surely Mr Walker could merely pass a law declaring such arrests illegal? tongue

And this is why states being allowed to subvert the federal government is a problem.

Walker was the Republican guy who got re-elected, right?

But doesn't the Constitution have a safety clause or something where national legislation overrides that of the states? So... wouldn't banning Obamacare conflict and shit?

[up][up]

He's not banning Obamacare (I don't even think a Governor can do that), he's ceding control to the federal government to set it up, as many other Republican governors have also done.

By not setting up its own exchange, Wisconsin will lose control over several key decisions over how easily consumers will be able to compare insurance plans, what plans can be sold through the exchange, what the plans must cover and their cost.

If I'm correct, Walker didn't win re-election, he just didn't get recalled successfully.

"But doesn't the Constitution have a safety clause or something where national legislation overrides that of the states?"

The Supremacy Clause states that if there's a federal law and a state law and they conflict, the federal law is supreme. State requirements can add to federal ones if there's non-conflicting room for it or if the federal law allows.

But there's a catch. Congress can't make nationwide laws on just any random subject matter. If it's not part of the enumerated powers (powers where constitution actually gave Congress permission), then the state law is supreme, and federal law has no power whatsoever. Any law that tries to do it is subject to being struck down.

That was the subject of the court ruling; it was trying to determine if there was a power permitting the passage of the nationwide law. The court ruled that the taxing power counts as the permission. But apparently the law says that states have an alternative option to implement their own healthcare.

The court ruling expanded upon that, saying that Congress can't take away existing Medicaid funding. But I'm a bit unclear on this point because I thought that this only applied to Medicaid expansion and not the entire healthcare plan. It looks like some states are just planning to ignore the plan altogether without a replacement.

Any law that basically says you get arrested for obeying another law is oxymoronic and also unpassable/unenforceable. And this new effort is going to come to nothing.

You also can't declare something illegal once it's been declared legal by the Supreme Court.

Grover Norquist: GOP Needs to Embrace Immigration Reform

Grover Norquist warns Republicans against carbon tax

Norquist blasted out a statement saying a carbon tax would almost certainly violate the pledge many Republicans took at his group’s behest not to raise taxes.

Norquist said he'd only support a carbon tax if the Constitution were amended to ban the income tax

[up] Grover Norquist is the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform a group whose goal is "a system in which taxes are simpler, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today."

Americans for Tax Reform is the group that created the ""Taxpayer Protection Pledge", in which the pledger promises to "oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rate for individuals and business; and to oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates." In the 113th Congress over 200 House Representatives and 39 Senators have signed the pledge.

He also is a Board member of the National Rifle Association and the American Conservative Union.

I'm honestly disappointed by how right wing the NRA is. While they obviously will have a leaning, I'd wish they'd looks at gun regulation with more of a "how can we make this work" and less of a "NOOOOOO THEY TAKIN OUR GUNZZZZZZ" attitude.
