The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]I approve. The law is the law. I am also drunk. Somehow this doesn't seem to affect my coherence. Makes me even less talkative than usual. Suspicious. Should remember to investigate.

Let's try to give this post some content.

I'm worried about the disparity in terms of technological backbone between the countryside and the big cities. Any specific reason why this kind of infrastructure isn't spreading faster? I fear there may grow an intolerably stark divide between the city and the country.

Unless he's going to provide something better than Obamacare, he's got literally no choice but to comply with the law. So he can probably block it for a while, but eventually he will have to bend to the federally mandated law. He's basically blowing hot air and costing millions of people their well being in the process.

No, he's allowed to opt out of the expansion of medicaid that Obamacare said that he's supposed to do.

It still baffles me that the mandate was upheld but that was struck down. Seriously what the hell?

[up][up]Oh really? Then why is the drinking age 21 across the nation?

edit: Just so you know I know the answer I'm just pointing out that there are ways to make the states bend.

Ummm how does that contradict what I'm saying?

It is federal law that you're not allowed to drink if you're not 21 or older. State laws could theoretically be set below 21, but that doesn't matter because it'd still be a federal crime.

[up][up]You seemed to be saying that the states can just ignore the federal law when you said the feds can't tell the states what to do. I was pointing out a situation in which the fed basically told the states that they had to adopt a certain policy. I fail to see how they can't force the states to accept the medicaid expansion.

[up]Just set up the exchange you idiot. It's going to happen one way or the other so you might as well have some marginal control over how it's implemented.

I think Walker might be treading more carefully than Perry; his state is probably more amicable to Obamacare than Texas after all.

Everyone I know thinks Rick Perry is a complete tool. I seriously hope he finally gets voted out next election, but we need stronger contenders than we've been getting.

@Handle: Can we please keep down the mockery? I realize this is upsetting, but there's only so many bad jokes one can make before it's an obnoxious echo chamber. You jumped over that line... a lot faster than normal.

@Kostya: 2014, I'm pretty sure, the off-year election. No idea of the Democrats have any candidates, or if another Republican is running against him. (Which has happened, but she sadly didn't get it.)

I'm worried about the disparity in terms of technological backbone between the countryside and the big cities. Any specific reason why this kind of infrastructure isn't spreading faster? I fear there may grow an intolerably stark divide between the city and the country.

It's because it isn't as appealing to companies to put that infrastructure in at places that are less densely populated. Putting down fiber optics in a city, where you've got thousands of customers in just a few blocks, is much more appealing than laying fiber in a county that has thousands of people in the entire county.

Rick Perry is indeed a tool, but the Democratic runners weren't very good. I was in San Antonio when Rick Perry got elected last, and thus had to put up with the preceding month or two of political ads and discussion crowding up the TV in the BEQ.

States can't ignore federal law. They can, however, create more restrictive laws.

A state could say "the legal age limit for drinking is 25" basically, but not "18"

[up] My guess is that Texas has been such a conservative state for so long that the democratic party may not have much in the way of an infrastructure in Texas, making it harder for them to run candidates. But then again, Houston.

[up]I would love this but I have a feeling it will get co-opted by unscrupulous politicians. Or it will just be dismissed as partisan hackery when it says something people don't like.
