Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I told you guys that Susana Rice's connections to the Benghazi debacle would become an issue.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I don't really trust The Government or Internet Service Provider with the Internet, but at least the Internet service providers seem to have a far firmer grasp on what the Internet is and aren't trying to force down stupid Internet copyright laws.
So I guess I'm anti-net neutrality.
Reid really doesn't want Kerry to go.
Bob McDonnell was top choice for attorney general in Romney Cabinet

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Most of the IS Ps are tied to Hollywood studios (or parts of the same conglomerate) who want to censor the internet to death.
Government can be persuaded to not be dumb fucks about the internet with action and votes.
Lesser evil, et al.
Also, IS Ps have been known to engage in unsavory practices at the expense of customers.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayYeah, the IS Ps HAVE already utilized various Bit Torrent tracking tech. So... in terms of stuff actually PASSED, Private is more oppressive than public.
So yeah.
Net Neutrality is a proposed rule that would prohibit IS Ps from giving preference to one site over another in terms of who gets bandwidth. I recommend wikipediing it, since that's a really bad summary on my part.

Deviant, do Wiki walking on Wikipedia. It's pretty much public knowledge.
Main ones off my head is Time Warner Cable is still likely tightly associated to Time Warner Inc. NBC Universal is owned by Comcast. I'm pretty sure there's others.
So, for example, Comcast owns NBC. Without net neutrality, they could legally give preferential treatment to NBC-related services and/or throttle competing services on their Internet service. In theory, markets should prevent this sort of thing (i.e. if anyone gets too cute, people will all jump ship to their competitors) but in many markets broadband Internet service is an oligopoly if not an outright monopoly.
The argument against net neutrality seems to focus on controlling bandwidth, since streaming video and such is going to clog up all the Internet tubes note . They may have a point, but considering that the IS Ps seem to go out of their way to not upgrade their network infrastructure (it's a widely-known fact among techie circles that the U.S. has some of the worst broadband among so-called "first-world" countries) I'm not too sympathetic.
Yeah, Obama's not gonna raise rates. Would rather go for "loopholes" and "deductions". No shock there.
Also, back at the first debate, Jim Lehrer said "Do you see a major difference between the two of you on Social Security?" Romney's position is to cut Social Security.
Obama's response? "I suspect that we've got a similar position." So what does that say about what Obama wants to do to Social Security?

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.

Well... on the face of it, that's a good look at the problem. Interesting about ORCA — I knew it had problems, but didn't realise how sodding huge they were.
