The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pat Robertson is old.

Republican Governors, who pledged to deny Obamacare coverage to their constituents, might backpedal on that.

Serocco, the reason why Reagan said it was because at the time, payments into the social security fund exceeded social security payments made to beneficiaries.

When you fail to understand the full dynamic of how Social Security works once you've been correct, you just make us damned dirty liberals look bad.

The supreme court ruled it was constitutional you jackass.

I swear they should have either forced all states to set up exchanges or had the government take care of all of them. This stupid half and half bullshit is messing everything up.

Wouldn't arresting people who implement a federal law be..well..what exactly? Just criminal or already skirting into treason and assorted crimes territory?

CIA Denies Petraeus' Mistress Claim It Took Prisoners in Benghazi

And this is why it is a very bad thing for CIA leadership to have affairs.

Yeah... having an affair is up there with gambling addictions and debt when it comes to things that allow one to be compromised through extortion/black mail/bribery. Pity because from what I've read he was damn good at both the CIA and the military. CNN called him the best US commander since Eisenhower, probably not without cause.

And yeah having your mistress try and get some money from the tabloids by spinning shit like that doesn't help.

Clearly, only Zen monks should be hired as DC Is.

I fricking loled at Bobby Jindal saying that the Republican Party needs to smarten up when he sold Louisiana's education system out to creationists. You're not part of the solution, Bobby.

OK state voters approve ballot measure to ditch affirmative action programs. Commentary.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Oklahoma seems to want to set a record for most backwards state in the Union. I'm glad I don't live there.

Edit: And Pat Robertson wants to set a record for most paleolithic attitude about gender relations. It's Broadwell's fault for seducing Petraeus. Face Palm.

Krugman has something interesting to say about this: he thinks that the true conservative agenda is not about free markets or moral values, but about authority. Men over women, bosses over workers, whites over other races, etc.

For those who like petitions, CREDO Action is running one entitled "Stand your ground, Mr. President", citing Krugman's column from Nov. 9. I'm on their list and I signed it.

I understand that the petition to get Macy's to drop Donald Trump is gaining steam, too.

To be fair Nixon was from the Rockefeller wing, same with Eisenhower back when you could be a liberal Republican. Hell if Watergate never happened, liberal Republicans probably would've still been the leading wing.

Reagan was the first time a Conservative ever had a chance on the Republican side, what we have now is pretty much the political equivalent of "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny for Conservatism.

Not really. The Democrats had already jettisoned the Confederate vote in the '60s, but a cordon sanitaire against a group as large as America's "states' rights" movement would be completely impossible even if America were structured to allow such a lockout.

It's highly unlikely that America would have become a three-party system, so our extreme rightists have to go somewhere.

The problem with Petraeus is not the affair. His problem is that he's an absolute failure of a general.

I gotta wonder, though, why the neo-Confederates blended so well with the religious right. Barry Goldwater must be rolling over in his grave.
