Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The following organizations are adamant about leaving Social Security and Medicare off the table for budget cuts: AFL-CIO, SEIU, AFSCME, MoveOn, Center for American Progress, Common Purpose Project, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
You know who he's meeting tomorrow? CEOs from General Electric, Ford, Chevron, American Express, Walmart, Aetna, Honeywall International, Xerox, Dow Chemical, Proctor and Gamble, PepsiCo, and International Business Machines. All of whom want to cut the social programs.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Corporations are supposedly people, so they should really be treated under the law as certified sociopaths/psychopaths, with a complete lack of empathy for anything that isn't money.
That isn't even an insult, it's a simple truth. Businesses exist to make money, and making money and playing fairly push against eachother.
The problem with Republican fiscal policy is that it's a bunch of private sector guys trying to treat the public sector like the private sector, which just doesn't work.
"Social Security is funded by the payroll tax levied on employer and employee. If you reduce the out-go of Social Security, that money would not go into the general fund to reduce the deficit. It would go into the Social Security trust fund, so Social Security has nothing to do with balancing a budget or erasing/growing the deficit."

...Who are you replying to?
I also want to add to "regulating the otherwise free market" point that it's not just about economics. Not having essential laws might cause businesses to create harmful products and threaten public safety; they may likewise resort to immoral practices in marketing and business-building.
To the Republican Party and Barack Obama, both of whom call Reagan their political hero.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Again Serocco, you cannot simultaneously hold the position that Social Security isn't bankrupt (or going to become bankrupt) AND hold the position that Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit.
SS does have to do with the deficit-in particular because the trust fund has been utilized for general expenses. Likewise, if the trust fund evaporates, SS will be paid for through general revenues.
I'm reminded of this:
Today's Republicans make Ike, Nixon and Reagan look like liberals

Huckabee on ‘Daily Show’: GOP has done ‘pathetic job’ of communicating.
